What they need

About the Role

The NYC Department of Correction is seeking an experienced consultant who can manage both enterprise Microsoft server infrastructure and the Genetec Security Center platform that supports video surveillance and security operations across the Department’s facilities. You will join the Genetec & Body Cameras Support Team in the IT Division and report to its supervisor. The team keeps the camera, access control, and body-worn camera systems running. These systems support staff safety, incarcerated individuals’ safety, operational transparency, and the integrity of evidentiary video.

This role is a strong fit for someone who is equally comfortable building and hardening a Windows Server environment, replacing a failed drive in an archiver’s RAID array, and troubleshooting a dropped camera stream at 2 a.m. You should also understand why uptime and chain of custody matter in a public safety setting.

Key Responsibilities

Genetec Security Center Administration

  • Administer, configure, and maintain Genetec Security Center, including Omnicast (video management), Synergis (access control), and related roles such as Directory, Archiver, Media Router, and Health Monitor.
  • Add, configure, and troubleshoot IP cameras, encoders, and edge devices across multiple facilities. Manage firmware and compatibility with supported device versions.
  • Monitor system health, video retention, and archiving performance. Find and fix recording gaps, storage problems, and failover events.
  • Tune Archiver and Directory performance, including load distribution, stream settings, and retention policies.
  • Manage user accounts, partitions, privileges, and role-based access within Security Center, following Department security policies.
  • Plan and carry out Genetec version upgrades, patches, and licensing changes with minimal disruption to operations.
  • Support video retrieval, export, and evidentiary workflows so that footage integrity and chain of custody are preserved for investigations, legal requests, and oversight bodies.

Body-Worn Camera Program Support

  • Provide technical support for the Department’s body-worn camera program, including docking stations, device assignment, upload and offload processes, and integration with backend evidence management systems.
  • Troubleshoot device, network, and upload problems and work with vendors to resolve them.
  • Help with deployment, inventory tracking, and lifecycle management of body-worn camera hardware.

Microsoft Windows Server & Infrastructure Administration

  • Install, configure, maintain, and harden Windows Server 2016/2019/2022 environments that host Genetec and related security applications.
  • Administer Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and service accounts that support security system infrastructure.
  • Manage virtualized environments (VMware vSphere/ESXi and/or Hyper-V), including server provisioning, snapshots, and resource planning.
  • Monitor and tune server performance (CPU, memory, disk I/O, network throughput) for high-volume video workloads.
  • Support Microsoft SQL Server databases used by Genetec, including backups, maintenance plans, and performance tuning.
  • Manage server storage, including RAID controllers, SAN/NAS systems, and direct-attached storage. Diagnose and replace failed drives, rebuild arrays, and plan capacity for long-term video retention.
  • Run server backup and recovery processes, including regular restore testing, and maintain disaster recovery and high-availability configurations for mission-critical systems.
  • Apply patches, vulnerability remediation, and antivirus/EDR updates in line with Department and NYC Cyber Command security standards.
  • Troubleshoot connectivity problems affecting security systems, including firewall rules, VPN and site-to-site links, and DNS/DHCP, working with network engineering and cybersecurity teams.
  • Develop PowerShell scripts to automate routine administration, health checks, and reporting.

Operations, Documentation & Collaboration

  • Respond to and resolve incidents and service tickets within defined SLAs, and escalate when appropriate.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule for after-hours outages affecting security systems.
  • Follow change management procedures. Maintain accurate configuration records, system documentation, network and architecture diagrams, standard operating procedures, and runbooks.
  • Work with network engineering, cybersecurity, facility operations, investigations, and outside vendors and integrators.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to end users and junior staff as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on Windows Server administration in an enterprise environment.
  • 3+ years of hands-on administration of Genetec Security Center (Omnicast and/or Synergis) in a multi-site deployment.
  • Strong working knowledge of Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and Windows security hardening.
  • Experience with VMware vSphere/ESXi and/or Hyper-V virtualization.
  • Hands-on experience with server storage, including RAID configuration, drive replacement, and array rebuilds.
  • Experience running server backup and recovery processes.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server administration as it relates to application support.
  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP networking, VLANs, firewalls, VPNs, multicast/unicast video streaming, and PoE as they apply to IP camera systems.
  • Ability to write and maintain PowerShell scripts for automation and reporting.
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills, including the ability to explain technical issues to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Willingness to work onsite at correctional facilities, including Rikers Island, and to take part in on-call rotation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Genetec certifications (e.g., Genetec Certified Technician, Genetec Certified Professional, or Omnicast/Synergis technical certifications).
  • Microsoft certifications (e.g., Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate, Azure Administrator).
  • CompTIA Security+, Network+, or equivalent.
  • Experience supporting body-worn camera programs and digital evidence management platforms.
  • Experience in law enforcement, corrections, public safety, or government IT environments.
  • Familiarity with CJIS Security Policy and handling sensitive or evidentiary data.
  • Experience with Genetec SDK/API integrations with other security or operational systems.
  • Basic Linux familiarity for supporting appliances and edge devices.
  • Experience with access control hardware (card readers, controllers, door hardware integration).
  • Experience with ITSM ticketing tools (e.g., ServiceNow, Cherwell).

What Success Looks Like

In your first 90 days, you will understand the Department’s Genetec architecture and server footprint, take ownership of day-to-day health monitoring, and close out priority incidents and remediation items. Over the engagement, you will improve system reliability, storage resilience, video retention compliance, and documentation, and you will help the team move toward a more resilient, well-governed security technology environment.

Why This Role Matters

This is a chance to apply your technical skills in one of the most consequential public safety settings in the country. The systems you support directly affect the safety, accountability, and transparency of operations across the City’s jails.
