About You
The GP Supervisor provides senior, real-time clinical leadership and oversight across LCD’s urgent primary care services, coordinating available clinical resources, maintaining oversight of patient safety and flow, and providing timely clinical advice, support and escalation. Working collaboratively with key operational colleagues, including the Duty Manager Team and Clinical On-Call Director, the GP Supervisor supports safe, effective and responsive service delivery and a positive working environment for colleagues and clinicians.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Operations
Routinely monitor clinical queues and service demand, identifying and responding promptly to high-risk, time-critical or deteriorating cases, including concerns escalated by clinical and non-clinical colleagues.
Maintain oversight of current and projected clinical capacity, proactively coordinating available resources to support safe patient flow across triage, face-to-face appointments and home visiting services.
Support the clinical prioritisation and coordination of cases, including advising on appropriate redistribution where required to maintain patient safety and effective service delivery.
Ensure prescription requests from non-prescribing clinicians are reviewed and managed safely and in a timely manner.
Maintain situational awareness of developing operational pressures and take early action in collaboration with the duty manager where there is a risk to patient safety, clinical capacity or service delivery.
Clinical Oversight
Identify, assess and mitigate emerging clinical risks in real time, including safeguarding concerns and clinical deterioration, escalating appropriately where required.
Provide accessible senior clinical advice and decision-making support to clinicians and operational colleagues throughout the shift.
Proactively identify vulnerable, complex or high-risk cases and escalate concerns through the appropriate governance route, including the Clinical Director On-Call, Silver On-Call or other designated senior leads.
Review and manage cases in accordance with relevant escalation protocols, organisational policies and professional standards.
Monitor clinician workload and provide appropriate support to maintain safe, effective and timely clinical decision-making.
Collaboration and Communication
Work collaboratively with Contact Centre Agents, Duty Managers, Non-Clinical Queue Managers and clinical colleagues to support coordinated clinical decision-making and effective service delivery.
Maintain clear and regular communication with the Duty Manager, Silver On-Call and Clinical Director On-Call regarding significant clinical, operational or capacity concerns.
Promote clear ownership of actions, effective handover and closed-loop communication to minimise the risk of unresolved or unallocated clinical work.
Continuous Improvement
Maintain awareness of, and contribute to the ongoing development of, relevant policies, procedures and Standard Operating Procedures, including the GP supervisor SOP and LCD’s OPEL Protocol.
Contribute to service improvement initiatives aimed at improving patient safety, patient flow, clinical effectiveness and the working environment for colleagues.
Participate in LCD’s clinical audit, quality improvement and governance activities.
Report operational or clinical risks and contribute to learning, review and service development where appropriate.
COMMUNICATIONS & RELATIONSHIPS
Maintain effective working relationships across clinical and operational teams, supporting clear communication of relevant service priorities, operational pressures and changes.
Attend relevant internal LCD meetings and contribute appropriately to service development, governance and learning in keeping with the responsibilities of the post.
PATIENT CARE
Ensure that the quality and safety of patient care remain central to all clinical and operational decision-making.
Support the delivery of safe, effective and timely care through appropriate prioritisation, continuity and clinical oversight across urgent primary care services.
