Grader Operator

Key Responsibilities

• Operate motor grader equipment safely and efficiently for grading, levelling, shaping, and finishing of roads and other work surfaces.
• Carry out road construction and maintenance activities, including grading shoulders, embankments, access roads, and work areas.
• Grade and level surfaces to the required slopes, elevations, gradients, and specifications.
• Spread, mix, and distribute materials such as soil, gravel, sand, and aggregates as required.
• Prepare surfaces for compaction, paving, drainage installation, and other construction activities.
• Maintain correct blade angle, depth, and machine alignment to achieve the required finish.
• Interpret site instructions, drawings, levels, grades, and specifications where applicable.
• Conduct pre-start and daily inspections of the grader and report any defects, damage, or abnormalities immediately.
• Check and monitor engine oil, hydraulic oil, coolant, fuel, tyres, cutting edges, hydraulic systems, and other critical components.
• Perform routine operator-level maintenance and cleaning of the grader as required.
• Ensure the grader is properly lubricated and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations and company procedures.
• Report mechanical faults and maintenance requirements promptly to the Plant/Mechanical team.
• Operate the grader within its safe operating limits and avoid practices that may cause unnecessary wear or damage.
• Coordinate with surveyors, site supervisors, equipment operators, banksmen, and other site personnel to achieve required levels and finishes.
• Maintain safe working distances from personnel, vehicles, structures, utilities, and other equipment.
• Observe all site traffic management, environmental, and occupational health and safety requirements.
• Maintain awareness of underground services, overhead hazards, uneven terrain, and other site-specific risks.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
• Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, operating hours, fuel consumption, maintenance issues, inspections, and work activities.
• Complete daily equipment logbooks, checklists, and other required operational records.
• Report accidents, incidents, near misses, equipment damage, and unsafe conditions immediately.
• Assist with the mobilization, positioning, and demobilization of the grader when required.
• Keep the operator's cabin and equipment clean and orderly.
• Ensure the machine is parked securely and safely after each operation.
• Perform other duties related to grader operation as assigned by the supervisor or management.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Minimum of Secondary School Certificate (SSCE/WAEC/NECO) or equivalent.
• Valid Grader/Motor Grader Operator certification or recognized heavy equipment operator qualification.
• Valid driver's licence where required by applicable regulations.
• Relevant operator's licence/certification as required for the project or site.
• Minimum of 2–3 years' experience operating motor graders, preferably in construction, roadworks, civil engineering, mining, or oil & gas environments.
• Good knowledge of grader operations, controls, attachments, and basic equipment maintenance.
• Ability to read and understand basic site instructions, equipment manuals, and work specifications.
• Knowledge of basic health, safety, and environmental requirements.
