Grid Connection Engineer | Renewable Energy Owner-Operator Location: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia (Hybrid)
Salary: Up to $180,000 Base + Performance-Related Bonuses
Position Type: Full-time, Permanent
About the Role
An outstanding opportunity has arisen for an experienced and driven Grid Connection Engineer to join one of Australia's larger renewable energy owner-operators, operating at the forefront of the energy transition from their Melbourne office.
In this pivotal technical role, you will take ownership of grid connection strategies, power system modelling reviews, and technical compliance for major utility-scale wind, solar, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across the National Electricity Market (NEM). Sitting directly on the owner-operator side, you will manage operational asset compliance as well as development-stage projects.
Working closely with internal project teams, technical consultants, Network Service Providers (NSPs), and AEMO, you will play a central role in guiding landmark renewable assets through the complete connection lifecycle, from early-stage prospecting through to commissioning, registration, and ongoing operational performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Power Systems Modelling & Analysis: Oversee steady-state and dynamic power system studies using PSCAD/EMTDC and PSS/E, managing operating asset compliance testing and non-compliance remediation.
- Grid Connection Approvals: Drive generator connection applications under the National Electricity Rules (NER Clause 5.3.4A processes), including GPS compliance framing, assessment, and negotiation.
- Technical Advisory & Strategy: Provide strategic technical input into project selection, grid capacity identification, system strength assessment, harmonic performance, and connection risk mitigation.
- Lifecycle & Asset Management: Lead R0, R1, and R2 compliance processes, Generator Performance Standards (GPS) tracking, and AEMO registration requirements across operational and development assets.
- Stakeholder Management: Manage key technical interfaces with AEMO, NSPs, external technical consultancies, project developers, and equipment OEMs.
Key Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical / Power Systems) or equivalent. CPEng / NER registration (or progress towards) is highly regarded.
- Experience: 2 to 5+ years of dedicated power systems engineering experience, ideally gained within an engineering consultancy, network operator, or IPP environment.
- Software Capability: Practical proficiency in PSCAD and PSS/E is essential. Familiarity with PowerFactory is advantageous.
- NEM Market Knowledge: Strong understanding of the National Electricity Rules (NER), AEMO generator connection processes, Schedule 5.2 compliance, and Australian grid codes.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven track record of reviewing technical reports and collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Location: Based in or open to relocating to Melbourne, Victoria .
What We Offer
- Competitive remuneration package up to $180,000 base + superannuation.
- Lucrative performance-related annual bonuses.
- Genuine hybrid and flexible working arrangements promoting work-life balance.
- Direct technical ownership of major operating and pipeline assets shaping Australia's renewable future.
- Professional development opportunities within a leading owner-operator platform.
