The opportunity

You will translate clients’ power requirements into practical grid connection strategies and support the development of the substations, cable routes and associated infrastructure needed to bring data centre development projects forward.

This is a hands-on consulting role for a technically capable professional ready to take ownership of client workstreams within a dynamic, growing data centre consultancy. You will combine electricity network knowledge with commercial judgement, helping clients understand what can be delivered, when, at what cost and with which dependencies.

Key responsibilities

• Work directly with clients to understand required capacity, load profile, resilience requirements, phased demand and target energisation dates, translating these into a clear power brief.

• Assess grid capacity and connection options during site selection and early development, identifying constraints, reinforcement requirements and implications for project viability.

• Prepare and coordinate connection enquiries and applications; liaise with distribution network operators and, where relevant, transmission owners and the system operator to progress realistic connection solutions.

• Review connection offers and technical information, explaining capacity, connection dates, costs, conditions and delivery risks in clear, commercially useful advice.

• Develop and compare power access strategies, including phased connections and alternative or interim options where appropriate, with specialist input on generation and battery storage.

• Define early requirements for substations and cable routes, coordinating with engineers, land and planning advisers to establish feasibility, consents, land rights and delivery interfaces.

• Support the procurement and coordination of designers, independent connection providers and other specialists; clarify contestable works, network approvals and asset ownership or adoption requirements.

• Support the transition from feasibility into substation and connection delivery, tracking approvals, long-lead equipment and energisation dependencies with the wider project team.

• Produce concise reports and lead client discussions, recommending next steps and escalating issues early; contribute to proposals and the development of the team’s services.

Experience and capabilities

• Demonstrable experience of electricity grid connections, power infrastructure or network development, with the ability to own defined workstreams and engage confidently with clients.

• Practical knowledge of UK distribution networks and the connection lifecycle, including applications, capacity assessment, connection offers, reinforcement and energisation dependencies.

• Understanding of high-voltage infrastructure, substations and cable connections, and how technical requirements affect development cost, programme and deliverability.

• Experience coordinating network operators, engineers, contractors or other stakeholders to progress connection solutions and resolve delivery constraints.

• Strong commercial awareness, clear written communication and organised project management, with consistent follow-through on actions and commitments.

• A relevant engineering, energy or infrastructure qualification, or equivalent practical experience.
