What they need
Responsibilities:
Design parametric gripper templates (parallel jaw, multi-finger, vacuum, soft-jaw, adaptive) that serve as the basis for automated generative design
Own the full electromechanical design of end-effectors: structure, actuation, sensing, wiring, and connector integration
Select and integrate actuators (servos, linear actuators, pneumatics) appropriate to each gripper archetype and force/speed requirement
Design sensor integration for grippers: force/torque sensing, tactile arrays, proximity detection, encoder feedback
Define DFM constraints for 3D-printed end-effectors — wall thickness, print orientation, embedded channel routing, material selection (nylon, TPU, carbon-filled composites, metal sintering)
Perform grasp force analysis: jaw moment neutralization, suction force calculations, center of-gravity compensation, friction cone analysis
Design and maintain tool changer interfaces for quick-swap of task-specific grippers across robot platforms (humanoids, cobots, mobile manipulators)
Define electrical interfaces: power delivery, signal routing, and communication protocols between the gripper and host robot
Build and test physical prototypes rapidly — iterate on finger geometry, compliance, contact surfaces, and actuation schemes
Work with the software team to ensure parametric CAD models are fully automatable and that the hardware exposes the right control/sensing interfaces
Define gripper families that cluster against a task taxonomy — help answer “do 3-4 gripper types cover 80%+ of tasks?”
Develop test fixtures and validation procedures for gripper performance (grip force, cycle life, repeatability, positional accuracy)
Qualifications:
BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Electromechanical Engineering
5+ years designing robotic grippers, end-of-arm tooling, or electromechanical manipulation hardware
Proficiency in Autodesk tools (Inventor and/or Fusion 360) — parametric modeling, assemblies, drawings, simulation
Direct experience with robot grasping: grasp planning, force closure analysis, contact mechanics, and real-world gripper deployment on manipulation tasks
Electrical design for embedded electromechanical systems: actuator drive circuits, sensor signal conditioning, connector/harness design, PCB specification for small-form-factor boards
Hands-on 3D printing experience — understands FDM/SLA/SLS/MJF design constraints, material properties under load, and how to design for print (snap fits, embedded cavities, compliant features)
Working knowledge of grasp mechanics: force closure, friction cones, moment analysis, underactuated mechanism design
Experience with at least one robot platform integration (UR, Franka, humanoid arms, or custom) Comfort with tool changer systems and mounting interfaces (ISO 9409, ATI, Schunk, custom)
Ability to read and create electrical schematics; experience specifying wire gauges, connectors, and signal types for robot end-effectors
Hands-on prototyping: you build, wire, and test your own designs
