What they need

About the role

The McCaughey Group is a family-owned regional business operating across food manufacturing, refrigerated transport, cold storage and agriculture. Our businesses include Spring Grove Fresh Food Company, Summerland Freight & Distribution, McCaughey Cold Storage and McCaughey Pastoral.

We are seeking a practical and resourceful Group Maintenance and Breakdown Technician to support our operations in Casino, NSW. The position will be primarily based at the Spring Grove Fresh Food manufacturing facility, with maintenance support provided across the group's cold-storage, transport, depot and other operational facilities as required.

This is a varied, hands-on position for someone who enjoys diagnosing problems, repairing equipment and taking ownership of maintenance work through to completion.

The role may suit an experienced maintenance technician, auto electrician, maintenance fitter, field-service technician or someone with a strong electromechanical background. Practical capability, initiative and fault-finding ability are more important than a particular job title.

The salary range is $80,000–$95,000 plus superannuation and reflects the requirement to work reasonable additional hours and occasional call-outs. Any hours beyond the reasonable requirements incorporated into the salary will be paid separately or provided as time off in lieu

Key responsibilities

  • Respond to breakdowns involving thermoformers, stringers, product labellers, vacuum packaging machines, slicers, conveyors, mincers, vacuum fillers, smoke ovens, shrink tunnels, pumps and other processing or packaging equipment.
  • Systematically diagnose mechanical, electrical, low-voltage control and pneumatic faults involving sensors, switches, relays, control wiring, solenoids, safety interlocks and associated components.
  • Complete general mechanical repairs and replace bearings, belts, chains, guards, fittings, hoses and other worn or damaged components.
  • Complete routine inspections and planned preventative maintenance to reduce breakdowns and improve equipment reliability.
  • Assist with maintenance of cold-store doors, seals, docks, drains, fixtures, fans and general facility equipment, and provide first response to equipment alarms.
  • Complete general building, workshop, yard, fleet and depot maintenance as required.
  • Make equipment safe, identify the likely cause of faults and coordinate established electrical, refrigeration, mechanical and equipment contractors when licensed or specialist work is required.
  • Assist contractors onsite and communicate fault symptoms, testing completed and parts required so repairs can be completed efficiently.
  • Identify replacement parts using equipment manuals, drawings, nameplates, manufacturer part numbers, measurements and supplier technical support.
  • Contact equipment manufacturers and suppliers to confirm part suitability, availability, pricing and delivery timeframes.

About you

  • Strong practical fault-finding and problem-solving ability.
  • Experience maintaining machinery, vehicles, packaging equipment or industrial plant.
  • Understanding of 12V and 24V DC control systems and confidence using a multimeter to trace faults.
  • Experience with sensors, relays, switches, solenoids, wiring repairs, pneumatics and general mechanical maintenance.
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams, equipment manuals and technical information.
  • Ability to identify, source and order parts accurately and deal confidently with equipment suppliers.
  • Current driver's licence.
  • Hands-on, resourceful and willing to assist across a broad range of maintenance tasks.
  • Calm and logical when responding to equipment breakdowns.
  • Able to work independently, prioritise urgent work and follow tasks through to completion.
