Job type: Internship

Experience: Any

Compensation: $17 / hour, plus commissions and bounties

Reports To: Chief of Staff (Bruce)

Location: NYC in-person part-time during the week

Overview

Howdy! Bruce here - Chief of Staff at String. If you’re a young person who is top 1% in ambition, creativity, and hustle, I want you to join me and help build our revenue engine from scratch.

String is building the complete layer for companies to collect and structure web data. We’ve hit 7-figure ARR, doubling this year by selling to everyone, from individual devs I meet on X to some of the most powerful financial institutions on the planet ($1T+ AUM). We’ve done it all with a lean team of < 10, with only one initial funding round.

In July, we launched our Web Access API, which allows companies to fetch, search, crawl, map, and browse nearly any site on the internet.

In <2 months from launch, that product reached six figures ARR. We have a 90%+ conversion rate from trial → purchase, and a 90%+ retention rate.

I want to get it in front of more people and companies. I want you to help me do it.

You’ll work directly with me, our CEO Rohit, and our two incredible Growth interns, Brian and Josh, to build out our growth engine from scratch. If you kill it, you’ll have a full-time role available for you.

If I was a kiddo again, this would be exactly the kind of job that I would want. I’ll let our current interns tell you what they’ve loved about it:

  • Josh: Working here has been great, because all the people at string believe in asking for forgiveness not permission. and that motto really allows you to take ownership of tasks, and have autonomy in the work you do. So you get to be creative and also a leader in your work.
  • Brian: Working here has been great because the people in charge trust you, the expectations are high, and it keeps you motivated to drive results and own real work. You also have the freedom to fail and make mistakes.

What do we do?

Today, if you want to collect web data, you have to jump through a ton of hoops:

  1. Build infrastructure to send thousands of requests to websites
  2. Build technology to avoid getting detected as a bot (incredibly difficult at scale)
  3. Code individual scripts for every website you want to scrape
  4. Fix all those scripts as websites change
  5. Ensure consistent data quality across runs

We solve all of these problems for firms so that they never have to worry about their web data pipelines. Thus, we 1) significantly improve their end-products, driving millions in revenue and 2) save them hundreds of thousands of dollars in engineering costs.

Our end customers use our product to:

  1. Make better decisions. E.g., “How much is Lululemon discounting their products currently? Therefore, should I buy their stock?”
  2. Fundamentally support their core products. E.g., “I’m an AI legal tech company and need to scrape tons of legal codes across state & local government websites.”

Building this would have been impossible before the AI revolution. We have a unique opportunity to build the first platform where anyone can collect structured data across any website with just a prompt. Right now, we’re working constantly to make that happen.

What will you do?

  1. Act. Get our products in front of as many people as possible. You are someone whose APM (actions-per-minute) is shockingly high.
  2. Own. We’ll work together and pick 1-3 initiatives for you to help us own end-to-end. You should come up with ideas. You should do them. They will go live. You will be a full member of the team.
  3. Discern. You should be good at writing, making videos, or some other growth-relevant skill. Anyone can prompt Claude. I want you to be able to create something uniquely good.
  4. Automate. Be AI-pilled. This is not in tension with the above goal. I want someone who will work to automate all of the boring parts of this job. You should want to learn how to write the perfect sales hook yourself, while ALSO trying to learn how to automate prospecting. Help us figure out how to give boring work to bots so we can do exciting work.
  5. Learn. As I said earlier, my time is yours, but that holds true across the team. You can bug our engineers, founders, and I to learn anything about our product or market. If you can prove to me that you are smarter, more creative, and a harder worker than other applicants, we can teach you the rest, and you’ll learn by doing.

Here’s what our current interns have said are the coolest things they’ve done:

  • Josh: Coolest thing I worked on was creating an algorithm to scrape and rank the top companies for String in nyc to sell to and helping out my co intern and boss meet those companies, deliver gifts, and see how well guerilla marketing can work
  • Brian: Coolest thing I've worked on is the mime marketing event in SF. I got to design the poster materials and own what the event would look like.

You and I may…

  • Run around the city together hand-delivering gifts to our dream customers
  • Spend a night writing letters to ship to companies in SF
  • Write and ship posts from our LinkedIn and X accounts
  • Record demo clips of our products and send them to customers
  • Meet with our engineers to build a custom scraping solution and write a job post about it
  • Post on TikTok / YouTube about what you’re learning on the job
  • Find us the companies who need our product now
  • Pitch YouTubers on our product so that they feature us
  • Send 1,000 outbound emails
  • Go to events in the city, find prospects in our ICP, and pitch to them

Compensation

This is an internship, so guaranteed salary is the NYC minimum wage of $17 / hour for a part-full-time work week.

Our big benefit is that we offer commission. If this internship goes well, you will help us close 6-7 figures in revenue this semester, and you will be rewarded for it. You could make more money than I do! I’d love that.

  1. 5% commission on any closed - won deal that you personally sourced from scratch
  2. $200 per enterprise you source who trials the product
  3. Some sort of fun bounty (all-expenses paid trip to Coachella, total WFH setup, skydiving trip, whatever) for a pie-in-the-sky goal that we work together to set!

Who are we looking for?

  1. Based in or willing to move to NYC. We want you in-person during part of the week and will figure out how to make this work with your class schedule. If you are a truly outstanding candidate, this is potentially flexible.
  2. People who've done something singularly impressive. This is how I am testing for slope. Show me why you’re a unicorn. I don’t care how.
  3. Self-starters. We’ll help you, but I am not holding your hand. If you want clear structure, deadlines, and thrive under tons of supervision, you probably shouldn’t apply. You will be shipping on day 1. If that is exciting, join us.
  4. Hard workers. We’ll work around your class schedule, but we are not counting hours, we are doing as much as we can, given your constraints. We’ll talk to you and agree on what this looks like, but given that you’re rewarded for your own success, we’re looking for someone who is willing to put in time to win.

Here’s what our current interns have to say about who should join our crew:

  • Josh: An ideal candidate would be someone who loves to experiment and test out new ways to grow a company and capture market share. Someone who likes to work in a very fast paced and growing environment, that brings new challenges a day and keeps you on your toes. Someone who is ready to put their head down and grind things out without a guarantee in success. You should not join if you are someone who is new to the industry maybe/needs more structure in work, or are looking for something more mentorship/guidance adjacent, or want to work in one designated space/ task and isn’t flexible.
  • Brian: An ideal candidate is someone who can build their own thesis and conviction about our company. They should be bought into the results we drive. Someone who is okay with ambiguity, has high agency, and above all is coachable. You should not join if you need a lot of structure or are uncomfortable with variability, or if you're looking for some lines on your resume or just a temporary college job.

If you are successful in this role, we will forever be in your corner. If you rock, Rohit’s network and mine are now your network. If you need a rec letter? We’ll write awesome ones. If you ever need anything, you can call me.

Why you'll join us

  1. We have the best product in the market. The bottleneck is getting it in front of buyers. If you rock, this will be the best job you’ve ever had and will be a massive career acceleration. We will set you up for success and give you the mentorship you need to kill it.
  2. This will be a blast. I think this is a super fun problem to try to solve. How do I get an awesome product that people want to the people who need it? This is a fundamentally solvable problem, and I’m excited to have the right person help us solve it.
  3. We’ll give you what you need! We’ll give you Claude and ChatGPT Pro Max subscriptions, and will let you purchase the tools you need to be successful, you’ll always have access to office in Midtown with snacks, drinks, and meals.
  4. This could become your job. If we hit our revenue targets, we wil have more demand than we can handle and will need someone to handle it. That would be you!

Interview process

  1. Initial conversation with Bruce (30 mins)
  2. Asynchronous exercise reviewed by Bruce and Rohit
  3. In-person interview and case exercise with Bruce, Rohit, and Logan (1-2 hours)

If you just AI-slop the application, you’ll get dumped in our slop-bin. Please use your brain and your voice.

I’m excited to meet you.

Other offers great for you!
