About the role

Ovation New Zealand Limited is seeking a skilled and experienced Halal Slaughterman to join our team in Gisborne Central, Gisborne. This is a full-time position that plays a crucial role in our meat processing operations. As a Halal Slaughterman, you will be responsible for carrying out slaughter operations in accordance with Halal certification requirements and New Zealand animal welfare standards. This role is integral to maintaining the quality and integrity of our halal-certified products whilst ensuring ethical and compliant processing practices.

Key responsibilities

• Performing halal slaughter operations using approved methods and techniques in compliance with Islamic dietary laws and certification requirements
• Operating and maintaining slaughter equipment and tools to ensure efficiency, safety and hygiene standards
• Conducting pre-slaughter animal assessments and handling to minimise stress and ensure animal welfare compliance
• Maintaining meticulous records of all slaughter operations and animal traceability documentation
• Adhering to strict food safety protocols and sanitation procedures throughout the slaughter process
• Working collaboratively with other team members in the processing line to maintain workflow efficiency
• Ensuring all work complies with Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 requirements and company safety procedures
• Reporting any equipment issues, safety concerns or non-conformances to management immediately

What we're looking for

• Current Halal certification or recognised qualification in halal slaughter practices is preferred
• Proven experience as a slaughterman or in a similar meat processing role, ideally within a halal or certified processing environment
• Thorough compliance and understanding of Islamic slaughter requirements and halal certification standards
• Knowledge of New Zealand animal welfare legislation and food safety requirements
• Strong attention to detail with excellent hygiene and sanitation practices
• Physical fitness and ability to perform repetitive tasks in a fast-paced, cold working environment
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team
• Commitment to continuous improvement and adherence to company policies and procedures
