What they need

Link Worker – The Harbour Scheme

Salary: £27,000 per annum
Hours: Average of 34 hours per week
Contract: Permanent, with funding secured for three years
Location: Great Yarmouth

Herring House Trust is looking for a Link Worker to work alongside people experiencing rough sleeping, building the relationships and trust that can help them move from the street into accommodation and towards greater stability.

This is a practical, relationship-based role. You will undertake street outreach across Great Yarmouth, support people moving into The Harbour or the Herring House Trust Hostel and continue working alongside them during the important early period after they have moved indoors.

You will work across street outreach, The Harbour, Brew Crew and HHT’s wider accommodation pathway. The people you support may have experienced long periods of rough sleeping, trauma and difficulty engaging with traditional services. Our approach is based on trust, consistency and relationships. We understand that change does not always happen in a straight line.

The role will include:

  • Building trusting and consistent relationships with people experiencing rough sleeping
  • Providing practical, person-centred support
  • Helping people access housing, health, substance use, benefits and other services
  • Supporting people as they move from the street into accommodation
  • Advocating for people who experience barriers to getting the help they need
  • Completing support plans, risk assessments and accurate case records
  • Working closely with colleagues, partner agencies and our Lived Experience Collective
  • Responding calmly and thoughtfully when situations are difficult

We are looking for someone who can build effective relationships with people who may find it difficult to trust or engage with services. You will need experience of working with people experiencing homelessness, multiple disadvantage or similarly complex circumstances, together with an understanding of trauma-informed practice.

No formal qualification is required. We welcome relevant experience and transferable skills. You must be able to maintain clear and accurate written records and work flexibly as part of a seven-day service.

You will be part of a small and supportive team, with regular supervision, case discussions, training and reflective practice with Herring House Trust’s counsellor. There will be time to think together about difficult situations, the impact of the work and how we can provide consistent support.

Working hours

The role averages 34 hours per week on a rolling rota, including daytime, evenings, some weekend and bank holiday work. There is no routine overnight working.

Street outreach is always undertaken by two members of staff, so you will not work alone while carrying out outreach.

The role includes participation in the Harbour out-of-hours on-call rota, for which an additional payment is made. As part of this rota, you may occasionally be required to provide out-of-hours cover in an emergency if a Harbour Worker is unable to work due to sickness.

Benefits include:

  • 34-hour average working week
  • 3% employer pension contribution
  • Regular supervision and reflective practice
  • Training and development opportunities
  • The opportunity to work towards the CIH Level 3 Certificate in Rough Sleeping Outreach Services

Pay: £27,000.00 per month
