Hardware R&D Engineer - Edge Devices / Edge AI Hardware

About the role

SenseMind is seeking a talented Hardware R&D Engineer specialising in Edge Devices and Edge AI Hardware to join our innovation team. This is a full-time position based in our Kowloon office, where you will take a central role in designing, developing and optimising cutting-edge hardware solutions for edge computing and artificial intelligence applications. This position is strategically important to our company's vision of delivering intelligent edge devices that process data efficiently at the network periphery, reducing latency and enabling real-time decision-making capabilities.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop hardware architectures for edge AI devices, incorporating processors, sensors, memory systems and power management components
• Conduct research and evaluation of emerging semiconductor technologies, microcontroller platforms and FPGA solutions suitable for edge computing applications
• Prototype and test hardware designs using laboratory equipment, simulation tools and development kits to validate performance specifications
• Optimise power consumption and thermal management in edge device designs to meet strict efficiency and reliability requirements
• Collaborate with firmware and software engineers to ensure seamless integration of hardware with AI algorithms and embedded systems
• Perform PCB (Printed Circuit Board) design, layout and manufacturing coordination for prototype and production hardware
• Conduct failure analysis and troubleshooting to resolve hardware defects and performance issues
• Document technical specifications, design documentation and test procedures for manufacturing and quality assurance teams
• Evaluate and select appropriate components and vendors, considering cost, performance, availability and reliability factors
• Participate in design reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of hardware designs and manufacturing processes

What we're looking for

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering or a related discipline; Master's degree is advantageous
• Minimum 3-5 years' experience in hardware design and development, preferably in edge computing, IoT devices or embedded systems
• Strong proficiency in digital and analogue circuit design principles and PCB design tools such as Altium Designer, Cadence or equivalent
• Hands-on experience with microcontrollers, System-on-Chip (SoC) platforms and processor selection for embedded applications
• Familiarity with AI hardware accelerators, neural processing units or FPGA implementations for machine learning at the edge
• Solid understanding of power management, thermal design and signal integrity considerations in high-performance devices
• Experience with hardware prototyping, testing and debugging using oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers and other laboratory instruments
• Knowledge of communication protocols such as Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, CAN or similar technologies used in edge devices
• Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently whilst collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams
• Strong communication skills and ability to document technical work clearly and comprehensively
• Experience with design for manufacturability (DFM) and manufacturing processes is a plus
• Familiarity with edge AI frameworks, TensorFlow Lite or ONNX is beneficial but not essential
