We're partnering with an innovative, technology-driven organisation to appoint an experienced Head of Engineering to lead the development and evolution of a business-critical digital platform.

This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on engineering leader to take ownership of technical strategy, platform reliability and team development within a fast-growing, highly regulated environment.

We're particularly interested in candidates with experience in B2B SaaS, telecommunications, fintech, identity verification or other regulated technology sectors, who can combine strategic leadership with strong technical expertise and a passion for AI-driven engineering.

The Opportunity

As Head of Engineering, you'll take responsibility for the architecture, development and ongoing performance of a highly available, multi-tenant platform supporting business communications and digital verification services.

You'll lead and develop a team of experienced engineers across full-stack development, cloud infrastructure and AI systems, working closely with senior leadership, product teams and external technical stakeholders.

This is a hands-on leadership position, requiring someone who can shape technical direction, drive engineering standards and remain actively involved in designing, reviewing and delivering production code.

You'll also play a key role in embedding AI-first engineering practices, ensuring innovation is balanced with security, reliability and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

You'll play a key role in driving engineering excellence by:

• Leading, managing and developing a multidisciplinary engineering team, supporting performance, career development and future hiring.
• Owning technical architecture, engineering standards and the technology roadmap, ensuring alignment with wider business objectives.
• Driving platform reliability, scalability and availability through robust monitoring, incident management and zero-downtime deployment practices.
• Overseeing the development and evolution of cloud infrastructure, APIs, databases and multi-tenant systems.
• Embedding AI-first engineering practices across software development, testing, code reviews and operational processes.
• Supporting the development and deployment of AI-powered solutions, ensuring appropriate evaluation, explainability and human oversight.
• Collaborating with product, operations and senior stakeholders to prioritise development initiatives and manage technical debt.
• Maintaining high standards of security, compliance and data protection, including ISO 27001, SOC 2 and UK GDPR requirements.
• Managing external technology partners, integrations and engineering expenditure, including cloud infrastructure costs.
• Remaining actively involved in hands-on development, technical problem-solving and production code delivery.

About You

You will be an experienced engineering leader with a strong technical background, a commercial mindset and the ability to balance strategic decision-making with hands-on delivery.

You will also have:

• 10+ years' experience building and operating production systems, including at least 3 years leading engineering teams.
• Proven experience managing highly available, business-critical platforms where reliability, data integrity and security are essential.
• Strong technical expertise across backend and frontend development, API design, relational databases and data modelling.
• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, containerisation, CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as code.
• Experience implementing zero-downtime deployment strategies, including progressive releases, feature flags and backward-compatible database migrations.
• A strong understanding of security, compliance and data protection requirements within regulated environments.
• Practical experience using AI tools throughout the software development lifecycle.
• Experience developing and deploying solutions using large language models, with an understanding of evaluation, reliability and cost considerations.
• Excellent leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to develop and retain high-performing engineering teams.
• A proactive, adaptable approach and the confidence to take ownership of complex technical decisions.

Experience within B2B SaaS, telecommunications, fintech, identity verification or other regulated technology environments would be highly advantageous.

Experience with event-driven architecture and workflow orchestration would also be beneficial.
