Head of Projects and Engineering

We are seeking an experienced and technically strong Head of Projects & Engineering to provide strategic leadership across the organisation’s engineering, project execution and technical delivery functions.

The successful candidate will oversee multiple multidisciplinary projects from engineering and design through procurement support, installation, commissioning and handover, ensuring delivery within approved budgets, timelines, quality standards, HSE requirements and contractual obligations.

The role requires a strong Oil & Gas / EPIC / EPC project background, exceptional technical leadership, commercial awareness and a proven ability to manage complex projects, engineering teams, contractors and client relationships.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership

• Develop and implement the Engineering and Project Delivery strategy in alignment with organizational objectives.
• Establish project governance frameworks, engineering standards and execution procedures.
• Provide technical and operational leadership across the project portfolio.
• Identify opportunities to improve project delivery, engineering efficiency and operational performance.
• Support Executive Management in strategic planning, tendering and business growth initiatives.

Project Management & Delivery

• Lead multiple engineering projects from initiation through design, execution, commissioning and handover.
• Ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget and to required quality standards.
• Monitor project performance against approved schedules, budgets, contractual obligations and KPIs.
• Identify project risks and implement appropriate mitigation strategies.
• Chair project review meetings and ensure timely resolution of technical and operational issues.
• Ensure complete project documentation, reporting and client handover.

Engineering Management

• Provide technical leadership across Electrical, Instrumentation & Control, Mechanical, Industrial Automation, Telecommunications, IT Infrastructure and Integrated Control Systems projects.
• Review and approve engineering designs, calculations, drawings, specifications and technical submissions.
• Ensure compliance with applicable engineering codes, standards and regulatory requirements.
• Oversee design reviews, FAT, SAT, commissioning and system integration activities.
• Drive engineering innovation, technical quality and continuous improvement.

Team Leadership

Lead and develop multidisciplinary teams including:

• Project Managers
• Senior Project Engineers

Responsibilities include:

• Workforce planning and resource allocation.

Resource Planning

• Develop resource plans across active projects.
• Optimise utilisation of engineering and project personnel.
• Coordinate manpower requirements across departments.
• Identify capability gaps and recommend recruitment requirements.

Contractor & Vendor Management

• Evaluate and manage engineering contractors and subcontractors.
• Monitor contractor performance against contractual requirements.
• Participate in technical evaluations during procurement.
• Work closely with Supply Chain to ensure timely availability of project materials and equipment.

Commercial & Contract Support

• Provide technical input during tenders, bids and proposal development.
• Review project scopes, technical specifications and engineering deliverables.
• Participate in project kick-off meetings and contract reviews.
• Support variation, claims and change control processes.
• Ensure engineering deliverables remain aligned with contractual commitments.
• Monitor project performance with consideration for cost, margin and profitability.

Client Relationship Management

• Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and key stakeholders.
• Represent the organisation at technical meetings and project reviews.
• Resolve technical and project-related issues professionally.
• Drive client satisfaction through effective project execution.

Reporting & Governance

• Prepare executive reports on project and engineering performance.
• Monitor project KPIs and performance metrics.
• Provide accurate forecasts on project progress, risks, costs and resource requirements.
• Report regularly to the Managing Director on project delivery and engineering performance.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Minimum of 12 years relevant engineering and project experience.
• Minimum of 5 years in a senior leadership role managing multidisciplinary engineering or project teams.
• Proven experience managing multiple complex projects concurrently.
• Strong experience in Oil & Gas, EPIC, EPC, industrial automation, electrical infrastructure, instrumentation and control, process systems or related engineering projects.
• Proven experience managing contractors, subcontractors, vendors and clients.
• Strong experience with project planning, cost control, engineering design and project execution.

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATIONS

One or more of the following is preferred:

• COREN Registration
• PMP
• PRINCE2
• PMI-ACP
• Certified Project Director
• NEBOSH or equivalent HSE certification

• Proven experience delivering major Oil & Gas EPIC/EPC projects.
• Strong experience in Electrical, Instrumentation & Control and Industrial Automation projects.
• Experience working with major Oil & Gas operators, EPC contractors and engineering service companies.
• Proven record of delivering projects with strong margins and minimal cost overruns.
• Experience managing large multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Strong OEM and technology partner relationships.
• Experience with major client technical approvals and project governance requirements.
• COREN registration and PMP certification.
• Experience working across multiple project sites.
• Strong understanding of Nigerian Oil & Gas regulatory and technical requirements.
