Job Summary

The Head of Technical will oversee the company’s technical insurance operations, including underwriting, risk assessment, reinsurance, policy administration, and technical claims oversight. The role is responsible for ensuring sound underwriting practices, portfolio profitability, regulatory compliance, and effective management of the company’s non-life insurance products.

Key Responsibilities

* Oversee underwriting operations across motor, fire, marine, engineering, property, and other general insurance classes.
* Establish underwriting guidelines, risk acceptance criteria, pricing standards, and technical procedures.
* Review complex risks and large insurance proposals, ensuring appropriate terms, premiums, and coverage limits.
* Monitor underwriting performance, claims ratios, loss experience, and portfolio profitability.
* Coordinate reinsurance arrangements and ensure adequate risk protection for the company.
* Provide technical oversight of claims assessment and settlement in collaboration with the Claims Department.
* Ensure compliance with NAICOM regulations and applicable insurance laws.
* Review policy wordings, endorsements, and insurance documentation for accuracy and adequacy.
* Identify emerging risks and recommend strategies to improve underwriting quality and reduce losses.
* Prepare technical reports and provide recommendations to management on portfolio performance.
* Lead, mentor, and evaluate the Technical Services team.
* Collaborate with Business Development, Finance, Claims, and other departments to achieve business objectives.

Qualifications and Experience

* Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Actuarial Science, Risk Management, or a related discipline.
* Professional qualification from the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) or an equivalent recognised insurance institution is an advantage.
* Minimum of 7–10 years’ relevant experience in the general insurance industry, including substantial technical or underwriting experience.
* Strong knowledge of non-life insurance products, underwriting principles, reinsurance, risk assessment, and claims management.
* Good understanding of NAICOM regulations and insurance market practices.
* Excellent analytical, leadership, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
