Head of Technical Engineering

The team builds enterprise technology at scale — modernizing compliance workflows, integrating LLM-enabled capabilities into enterprise platforms, and changing how software is designed, built, tested, and supported.

You will be the senior technical leader for a portfolio of applications, leading an initial team of engineers with scope to grow as the delivery model matures. This is a hands-on technical leadership role — not a management layer . You will personally own delivery of at least one project while providing technical leadership across your portfolio: designing solutions, guiding architecture decisions, and pairing with engineers on the hardest problems. You will be responsible for a team that has largely operated in a staff-augmentation model and will evolve to full application ownership.

You're not reviewing every PR, but you're credible enough technically that your senior engineers seek your input on hard decisions — and trust your judgment when you give it. Expect to spend meaningful time each week in technical design, architecture review, enforcing engineering standards, incident/problem solving, and direct coaching of senior engineers.

Your portfolio includes applications that need stabilization — regulatory updates, compliance maintenance, production reliability — alongside modernization work that starts from day one. The dual mandate is to stabilize and transform simultaneously, not sequentially. That means building modern development standards, AI-assisted engineering workflows, and local decision-making capability. Concretely: you'll evaluate where LLMs can reduce the manual burden of compliance updates, build your team's fluency with AI-assisted development tools, and establish the engineering discipline required to put AI-enabled capabilities into production responsibly.

This role is for a builder-leader: someone who has led engineering teams at scale, improved engineering discipline, owned real application outcomes, and remains technically credible enough to guide senior engineers through difficult architecture, reliability, and modernization decisions.

Responsibilities

• Lead an initial team across multiple applications, with scope to grow

• Design and implement end-to-end solution architectures for large-scale platforms

• Stay close enough to the work to guide architecture, review critical designs and code paths, troubleshoot high-severity issues, and pair with engineers on the most complex problems

• Own technical decisions locally — architecture, tooling, patterns, trade-offs

• Drive engineering quality in partnership with colleagues across regions: code review standards, testing practices, deployment reliability

• Establish sprint discipline across your teams: mandatory retrospectives, root cause analysis for production incidents, and a transparent inject/tradeoff process that prevents unplanned work from disrupting committed sprints

• Partner with portfolio leadership on roadmap execution

• Mentor and develop senior engineers and managers on your team

• Ensure teams function as co-located, full-stack units rather than distributed task workers or pure staff augmentation

• Identify and address technical debt, performance bottlenecks, and scalability gaps

• Own operational excellence for your portfolio: uptime, incident response, release reliability, and support burden reduction

• Lead QA transformation — move from externally directed manual testing to locally owned automated testing; address QA-to-dev ratio, establish test automation standards, and eliminate firefighting culture through process discipline

• Establish and maintain regular operational reporting (production health, delivery velocity, quality metrics, technical debt) for portfolio stakeholders

• Champion modern engineering practices: CI/CD, infrastructure as code, observability

• Drive AI adoption across your team: AI-assisted development workflows, LLM integration, agentic automation

• Evaluate and implement AI/ML capabilities that improve delivery speed, accuracy, or client outcomes

• Build your team's fluency with AI tools (coding assistants, test generation, automated review)

Requirements

• This role requires you to be based in Mexico City

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field

• 15+ years of software engineering experience with progressive technical leadership

• Proven ability to lead teams of 30+ engineers across multiple workstreams

• Strong hands-on skills — you can still architect, code, debug, and deploy

• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS and Azure required; GCP acceptable)

• Deep understanding of microservices, event-driven architecture, and API design

• Experience with .NET/C#, modern JavaScript/TypeScript, or Python at enterprise scale

• Familiarity with spec-driven development at scale, working backwards from written specifications, not ticket-driven iteration

• Track record of improving engineering quality, velocity, and team capability

• Excellent communication with both technical teams and business stakeholders

• Experience working in distributed/global team models and cross-border collaboration

Preferred

• Experience building or integrating AI/ML systems in production (LLMs, agentic workflows, RAG, embeddings)

• Experience with agent-to-agent protocols and agent orchestration patterns

• Experience with API-first architecture and platform integration

• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools and workflows

• Experience in financial services or regulatory compliance domains

• Experience transforming teams from staff-augmentation to autonomous delivery

• Familiarity with Azure DevOps and agile delivery practices at scale

• Experience with forward-deployed or embedded engineering models working directly with business stakeholders
