Reimagine school. Support students. Change lives. At ChallengeU, we do high school differently! We’re a fully online dropout recovery and prevention high school, dedicated to helping students aged 14–21 who have fallen behind or disconnected from traditional education. Through flexibility, compassion, and personalized support, we help students reclaim their path to graduation.
Note: While this is primarily a remote role, team members must be available to travel within Ohio to support required state testing and school events. Occasional evening availability is needed to connect with families outside of standard hours.
What You’ll Do:
As a School Counselor, you’ll be the steady hand students and families turn to when school feels overwhelming — the person who knows exactly which credits they need, which door to knock on, and what comes next. Your role will include:
- Relationship Builder: Build strong, supportive, and caring relationships with students that help them pursue their personal, academic, and life goals.
- Pathway Planner: Guide students and families through course selection aligned to Ohio credit and graduation requirements, student needs, and student interests — including building a Four Year Plan that maps the route to a diploma.
- Graduation Guru: Become the school’s go-to expert on high school graduation requirements, and keep school leadership and graduation coaches current on what students need.
- Schedule Strategist: Advise students on course drops and schedule changes, seeking support as needed while ensuring the school’s course selection and drop policies are followed.
- Transcript Keeper: Review student transcripts for accuracy and maintain or update those records for assigned students.
- Graduation Planner: Work alongside the records team to request records from a student’s previous school and forward records when appropriate.
- Plan Guardian: Oversee and maintain the graduation plan for every student on your caseload.
- Records Champion: Support efforts to secure complete and accurate student records across the school.
- Student Support Anchor: Serve as a key member of the Student Support Team (SST) and participate in developing the school’s crisis prevention and management plans.
- At-Risk Navigator: Coordinate with coaches to identify students who are at risk or in crisis, providing support and resources to students, families, and outside stakeholders."
- Family Connector: Implement programs that support students and families through interpersonal adjustment challenges, and work with school teams to connect families to school and community resources.
- Safeguarding Advocate: Report and refer critical incidents that jeopardize student well-being as required by law, administrative regulation, and ethical standards — staying current on Ohio incident reporting and documentation requirements.
- Transition Bridge: Support students enrolling mid-semester by guiding teachers on integrating them into coursework and ensuring prior grades, credits, and evaluations are handled correctly.
- Withdrawal Guide: Support families through the school withdrawal process, including data collection related to withdrawal.
- Curriculum Liaison: Communicate with the Curriculum Team to confirm course offerings meet state requirements.
- Testing Ally: Support the administration of high school testing — including exit exams, PSAT, SAT, and ACT, — and travel to approved locations to assist as needed.
- Enrichment Builder: Implement special programs such as CCP, CTE, SAT and ACT preparation, and college entrance preparation.
- College & Career Compass: Help students research post-secondary and career options, prepare college and job applications, and understand admissions requirements and financial aid.
- Commencement Coordinator: Coordinate high school graduation ceremonies.
- Team Builder: Support professional development activities for teachers and school staff.
- Mission Champion: Take on other duties as assigned in service of helping students stay engaged and earn their diploma.
Who You Are:
- Someone who connects easily with students and families through virtual tools, and who can build trust over a screen.
- Deeply knowledgeable about graduation requirements — or eager to become the person everyone asks.
- Highly organized and punctual, with a customer-focused approach to students, families, and colleagues.
- Flexible and steady in a fast-paced environment where priorities shift.
- A team player with demonstrated leadership instincts.
- Comfortable navigating sensitive conversations around crisis, withdrawal, and family circumstances without judgment.
- Passionate about helping students ages 14–21 overcome barriers and graduate.
What You’ll Need:
- Licensure: Valid Ohio School Counselor license issued by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW).
- Education: Master’s degree required.
- Knowledge Base: Familiarity with the ASCA National Model, OSCA, and School Counseling Standards.
- Technology: Strong technology skills, including Google Workspace and Microsoft Office; experience with DASL preferred.
- Communication: Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Availability: Willingness to travel within Ohio for state testing and school events, and to work occasional evening hours to support families.
- Mobility: Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Work Setup: Reliable high-speed internet and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.
- Residency: Residence in Ohio.
