Full-Time Position | Year-Round Employment | 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM

POSITION OVERVIEW

Vernon Township is seeking an experienced Highway Maintenance Worker to join our highway department team. This position is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of township roads, bridges, and related infrastructure and township facilities. The ideal candidate will have snow removal experience and the ability to operate heavy equipment while ensuring the safety and accessibility of our community's roadways.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

This position reports directly to the Highway Department Foreman, working as part of a maintenance crew to support township operations and community needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Operates and maintains highway equipment including trucks, tractors, mowing machines, snowplows, salt spreaders, compressors, and bucket truck. Perform routine equipment servicing and cleaning.

2. Perform snow removal from township roadways and township property including parking lots and sidewalks to ensure safe access and travel.

3. Cleans, maintains and replaces culverts, storm sewers, gutters, and other drainage facilities to ensure proper water flow and prevent flooding.

4. Repairs, replaces, and patches asphalt and other road surfaces including any necessary shoulder repairs to maintain roadway integrity.

5. Direct and signals traffic during road maintenance operations to ensure public and worker safety. Maintains proper traffic control procedures and safety protocols.

6. Other necessary tasks to maintain safe driving conditions on Township roads

7. Performs other duties as required or assigned by Highway Foreman.

8. Performs general building and grounds maintenance as required.

9. May be required to work at elevated heights.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

2. A valid CDL Class A or B (with Air Brakes) driver’s license.

3. A clean driving record.

4. Snow plowing experience.

5. Experience in road maintenance, general property maintenance, farming, or building trades. Proficiency with hand tools and maintenance equipment operation.

6. Experience with tree trimming.

7. The ability to perform labor. (Examples: shovel gravel, lift 50 lbs., etc.)

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Competitive Salary: Starting at $27.00 - $39.00 per hour (based on experience)

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position requires both indoor and outdoor work in all weather conditions including extreme cold, heat, rain, and snow. Physical demands include lifting heavy materials, operating in confined spaces, and working at various heights. Emergency callouts will be required during snow and severe weather events.
