HIL Test Engineer - EV Charging (Hardware-in-the-Loop)

Long Beach, CA

6 Month C2H

Role summary

The HIL Test Engineer - EV Charging develops and executes tests that verify electric-vehicle charging systems and their interactions with vehicle controls. The role uses real-time simulation and hardware test benches to identify issues early, improve product quality, and support reliable charging across vehicle programs.

We’re looking for a candidate to help us develop and maintain HIL test environments and implement automated tests. This role involves collaborating with power electronic controls and developers to create and implement automated test cases, execute and analyze test results and ensure traceability of test cases to requirements.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain HIL test benches for EV charging systems, vehicle control modules, and related communication networks.
  • Develop comprehensive automated test case sequences that cover a wide range of operating conditions, fault scenarios and functional safety requirements.
  • Execute automated HIL tests, collect and analyze data, identify and document issues and provide clear and concise reports to development teams. Maintain and add regression test cases for different programs along with its integration with CI/CD workflow/pipelines.
  • Verify charging operation across relevant conditions, including AC and DC charging, connector states, power limits, fault handling, and recovery behavior.
  • Test interfaces and communication between vehicle systems and charging equipment, including applicable charging protocols and network messages.
  • Perform eFuse and HSD functional and fault-condition testing, under faults such as short to battery, short to ground, overcurrent, overvoltage etc. Analyze fault detection, diagnostic reporting, current limiting, shutdown, and recovery behavior for eFuse and HSD channels.
  • Integrate and configure hardware, models, simulation environments, and test software.
  • Analyze test results, reproduce failures, document defects, and work with software, systems, and hardware teams to resolve issues.
  • Support requirements traceability, test coverage reporting, regression testing, and release readiness.
  • Improve test benches, automation, and continuous-integration workflows.
  • Follow applicable engineering, electrical safety, cybersecurity, and quality processes.

Basic qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of EV charging systems, vehicle control systems and power-electronics fundamentals.
  • Experience developing and executing tests for embedded software or vehicle electronics.
  • Comfortable using oscilloscope and basic probing tools for debugging purposes.
  • Experience with any HIL and real-time testing software tools such as Vector, Typhoon, NI preferred.
  • Familiarity with Body Controls Module testing, eFuses, HSDs, or automotive power-distribution circuits.
  • Familiarity with vehicle communication networks such as CAN, CAN FD, or Ethernet.
  • Proficiency in a scripting or programming language used for test automation, such as Python, CAPL, or MATLAB.
  • Hands-on experience in using test equipment and validation tools (CANoe, CANalyzer, vTeststudio, Tracetronic)
  • Comfortable with using schematics and layout files to understand design information.
  • Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with HIL platforms such as Vector, dSPACE, NI, or comparable systems.
  • Familiarity with charging standards and protocols such as IEC 61851, ISO 15118, or SAE J1772.
  • Experience with automotive diagnostic and network-analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of model-based development, control-system simulation, or requirements-management tools.
  • Experience with automated testing, continuous integration, and software version control.
  • Understanding of functional safety, cybersecurity, and automotive development processes.
