HIM Coder/Financial Counselor

Job Summary

The outpatient coder is responsible for the accurate coding of clinical diagnoses, including operations and procedures, to ensure proper billing and efficient healthcare service delivery. Alongside coding, the coder also identifies and records the appropriate charges associated with each medical service provided, ensuring all billable items are captured accurately.

The Financial Counselor is responsible for evaluating patient visits to identify and resolve funding/coverage with either assistance applying for Medicaid, disability, financial assistance, insurance coverage or resources.

Perform a variety of Health Information Management department functions including, but not limited to, liaison roles, record retrieval and processing, identity management and reporting, data integrity, deficiency analysis, tracking and reporting, and performing quality audits. May perform other responsibilities depending on their work assignment. Effectively communicate with patients and providers. Ensure privacy & confidentiality of protected health information.

Responsibilities

• Abstracts data from medical records and other sources.
• Maintains current knowledge of coding rules and regulations.
• Assigning codes for diagnoses and procedures using ICD (International Classification of Diseases) coding system
• Reviews and verifies documentation supports diagnoses, procedures and treatment results
• Identifies and records the appropriate charges associated with each medical service provided, ensuring all billable items are captured accurately.
• Accurately completes Medicaid applications to assure 100% compliance with processing of Medicaid applications.
• Documents all patient account correspondence in the appropriate note field
• Reviews admissions to identify patients that need Medicaid assistance or charity assessments.
• Contacts patients including Phone calls to assure timely completion of Medicaid applications.
• Uses all means available including availability to hospital staff to meet goals to turn self-pay into Medicaid and/or charity including attending weekly self-pay meeting and having information ready on patients.
• Assists in regular analysis of patient records
• In absence of other employees in the medical record department, completes their job duties such as release of information, statistics, and any other duty as assigned.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
• Entering charges on patient accounts.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Basic understanding of clerical procedures and systems such as recordkeeping and filing.
• Ability to work independently.
• Strong organizational skills
• An understanding of financial reimbursement systems.
• Coding experience

Education and Experience:

• Must be a graduate of an accredited school of Health Information Management or have an active coding certificate.
• A minimum of one year of HIM department experience is preferred; two or more years is strongly preferred
• Previous knowledge of CMS regulations.

Pay: $20.75 - $30.34 per hour

Expected hours: 40.0 per week
