What they need
Job Summary HITL Development Engineer — “The person who builds the testing setup”
This person doesn't primarily develop the motor/drive control logic. Their main job is to create a simulated environment that behaves like the real locomotive/traction system so that engineers can test the software safely.
Look for candidates who have:
- HIL/HITL experience — this is the biggest keyword.
- Experience with OPAL-RT, dSPACE, Typhoon HIL, Speedgoat, etc.
- Strong MATLAB/Simulink experience.
- Experience building plant models / real-time simulation models.
- Experience with HIL testing, test automation, fault injection and regression testing.
- Some understanding of inverters, converters and power electronics.
- Experience testing embedded software.
In one sentence:
“I need someone who can build and operate a virtual version of the real system to test the actual controller/software.”
Resume red flags:
We are seeking a highly motivated HITL (Human-in-the-Loop) Development Engineer to join our innovative team dedicated to advancing intelligent systems through rigorous testing and system integration. In this role, you will develop, implement, and optimize human-in-the-loop processes to enhance machine learning models and autonomous system performance. Your expertise will drive the design and refinement of complex mechanical and systems engineering solutions, ensuring seamless collaboration across multidisciplinary teams. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge projects that shape the future of automation and intelligent technology.
Duties
- Design and develop human-in-the-loop testing frameworks for autonomous systems, incorporating mechanical, electrical, and software components.
- Conduct root cause analysis to identify system failures or performance bottlenecks during testing phases.
- Utilize CAD software such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks for mechanical design, 3D modeling, and product development.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, civil engineering, and systems engineering to integrate system components effectively.
- Implement scripting and programming solutions using Python, C++, MATLAB, and other tools to automate data collection, analysis, and system simulations.
- Perform system troubleshooting and debugging to optimize hardware and software interfaces within complex mechanical systems.
- Lead project scheduling efforts to ensure timely delivery of testing milestones while managing multiple concurrent initiatives.
- Analyze building code compliance, fire protection systems, and BIM (Building Information Modeling) tools for construction-related projects when applicable.
- Gather data through laboratory experiments, 3D scanners, schematics, and field research to inform design improvements.
- Communicate technical findings clearly through detailed reports, presentations, and team meetings to support decision-making processes.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Civil Engineering, Quantum Engineering or related fields with strong foundation in math and engineering principles.
- Proven experience practicing in an industrial or manufacturing engineering role with a focus on mechanical design or system integration.
- Proficiency with CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and BIM tools; experience with 3D modeling for product design is essential.
- Strong scripting skills in Python, MATLAB, C++, or similar languages for automation and data analysis tasks.
- Knowledge of programmable logic controllers (PLCs), fire protection systems, building code analysis, and construction experience is desirable.
- Familiarity with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing), schematics creation, technical troubleshooting, and laboratory research methods.
- Excellent project management skills with the ability to coordinate schedules across multiple teams while maintaining attention to detail.
- Effective cross-functional communication skills to collaborate seamlessly with engineers from diverse disciplines including manufacturing, civil construction, mining or research sectors.
- Experience working with data collection tools such as 3D scanners or laboratory instrumentation is a plus.
