What they need

  • Work anywhere in New Zealand
  • Permanent, full time role.

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is the country's largest employer, delivering universal public healthcare to 5 million New Zealanders.

We provide essential hospital, specialist, and community health services across 80+ locations - from large urban centres to rural towns and remote communities.

Our goal is to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders by delivering equitable, accessible and innovative care.

About the Role

We are seeking a capable and motivated HMC Engineer to join our Digital Operations team, operating at a technical delivery level (SFIA Level 3). In this role, you will deploy, configure, and maintain critical services, ensuring availability, stability, security, and compliance with technical standards. You will play a hands-on role in troubleshooting complex technical issues, supporting solution implementation, and continuously improving service performance within a secure and reliable environment. Working closely with senior engineers, project teams, vendors, and a wide range of clinical and operational stakeholders, you will help deliver high-quality digital services that support equitable health outcomes. You'll bring strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent communication, and the ability to manage competing priorities under pressure. With a proactive, customer-focused mindset, you'll champion innovation, collaboration, health and safety, and continuous improvement, contributing to national ways of working and supporting Māori and Pacific-led aspirations in the design and delivery of health services.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The Digital Operations team sits within the wider Digital Services Directorate and plays a critical role in supporting clinical and operational services across the organisation at national, regional, and local levels. The team works collaboratively with clinical stakeholders, HMC users, delivery teams, senior digital leaders, and external vendors to ensure reliable, secure, and high-performing digital environments that enable quality patient care. With a strong focus on continuous improvement, innovation, equity, and health and safety, the service fosters a culture of teamwork, shared knowledge, and national alignment, removing silos and simplifying ways of working to deliver better outcomes for the communities we serve.

About you

You are an experienced ICT professional who brings a strong technical foundation and a proactive, service-oriented mindset to digital operations. With proven experience in deploying, configuring, and maintaining IT services, you are confident troubleshooting complex technical issues, managing incidents, and supporting the implementation of robust digital solutions. You combine hands-on operational capability with strong communication and relationship-building skills, enabling you to work effectively with stakeholders across clinical, operational, and technical environments. You demonstrate a clear understanding of your obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi and apply its principles meaningfully in your work, while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and accountability. Adaptable and resilient, you are comfortable managing competing priorities, participating in on-call rosters, travelling when required, and working outside standard hours to ensure service continuity and excellence.

To succeed in this role, you will bring:

  • ICT / Technology professional with 1-3 years of experience in deploying, configuring, and maintaining digital or IT services.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in providing day-to-day technical support for end-users and/or IT systems.
  • 1-3 years experience in deploying and configuring complex IT solutions, troubleshooting and resolving technical issues and managing incidents.
  • Ability to execute operational tasks, troubleshoot technical issues, and support the implementation of solutions.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or other relevant qualification, or equivalency in a related field is preferred.
  • The role will require on-call participation and occasional work outside standard hours to support system maintenance, incidents or project work.
  • Post graduate certificate in relevant fields (e.g., digital infrastructure or networking systems) is required.
  • Service management and ITIL certifications are desired.
