What they need
Home-Based Foster Care Provider
Wooten Family Services is looking for individuals and families across West Virginia who are interested in becoming approved Home-Based Foster Care Providers through our licensed foster-care partners.
Home-based foster care is meaningful work with real responsibility, and families receive real financial support for providing that care in their own approved home.
Approved foster families receive a daily foster-care maintenance payment for each eligible child placed in their home.
Current basic West Virginia rates are approximately:
- Ages 0–5: $26 per day — about $790 per month
- Ages 6–12: $28 per day — about $851 per month
- Ages 13–21: $31 per day — about $942 per month
Payments are provided per child during an eligible placement. Some children and specialized foster-care programs may qualify for additional levels of support based on their needs and program requirements.
These payments help support the real household costs that come with caring for another child, including food, housing, utilities, transportation, clothing, school needs, activities, supervision, and everyday family life.
NO PREVIOUS FOSTER-CARE EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED
You do not need to already be certified.
Required foster-parent training is provided at no cost, much of the training can be completed online through our partner agencies.
Our licensed foster-care partners handle formal certification, home assessment, background requirements, child matching, and placement.
WFS is here to help you understand the process, prepare for each step, connect with the right partner, and find additional resources for your family.
SUPPORT BEYOND MONTHLY PAYMENTS
Depending on need, eligibility, and availability, WFS and our participating partners may also help families access:
- Beds, mattresses, and bedding
- Clothing and hygiene supplies
- School supplies
- Household and placement-startup necessities
- Counseling and behavioral-health services
- Medical-care coordination
- Community and family-support resources
- Help navigating the foster-care system
- Ongoing support after a child is placed in your home
WHO MAY BE A GOOD FIT?
Home-Based Foster Care Providers come from many different backgrounds.
You may already be raising children, have grown children, have never had children, work outside the home, work from home, be retired, or simply have the time, stability, and room in your life to care for a child.
What matters most is your ability to provide a safe and stable home, consistent supervision, transportation when needed, patience, and dependable care.
WHAT DOES A HOME-BASED FOSTER CARE PROVIDER DO?
Home-Based Foster Care Providers help children with the everyday things that make a home feel safe and dependable:
- Providing a safe place to live
- Preparing meals
- Helping with school
- Providing transportation
- Attending appointments
- Maintaining routines
- Supervising and supporting the child
- Encouraging healthy relationships
- Working with the child’s care team
- Being a consistent adult when much of the child’s life may have been uncertain
WHY FOSTER?
Children entering foster care do not need a perfect family.
They need someone willing to show up.
Someone who makes dinner.
Someone who notices when something is wrong.
Someone who helps with homework, celebrates birthdays, drives them where they need to go, and provides some stability when life has become uncertain.
They need safety.
They need consistency.
They need hope.
Wooten Family Services believes families who take on that responsibility should also have meaningful financial, practical, and professional support behind them.
INTERESTED?
Applying does not obligate you to accept a child or continue with certification.
The first step is simply a conversation.
We will learn more about you and your household, answer your questions, explain the financial and practical support available, and help you understand whether becoming a Home-Based Foster Care Provider could be a good fit for your family.
