Horizontal Directional Drill Locator

CM Cable LLC is an underground utility construction contractor specializing in fiber optic infrastructure and telecommunications projects throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington.

We are looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Locator to join our underground construction team.

Job Description:

The HDD Locator will be responsible for accurately tracking and guiding directional drilling operations to ensure safe and efficient underground utility installations. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with HDD locating systems and a strong understanding of underground utility construction.

Responsibilities:

• Operate DigiTrak or similar HDD locating equipment.
• Accurately track drill head depth, pitch, direction, and position throughout drilling operations.
• Communicate continuously with the drill operator to maintain accurate bore paths.
• Read and interpret utility markings, bore plans, and construction drawings.
• Identify potential underground conflicts and hazards.
• Assist with bore planning and safe drilling operations.
• Assist with potholing, utility exposure, and verification using vacuum excavation equipment as needed.
• Perform daily inspections and basic maintenance of locating equipment.
• Coordinate with the drilling crew to maintain productivity and project quality.
• Follow OSHA regulations and company safety standards.

Requirements:

• 2+ years of HDD locating experience preferred.
• Experience using DigiTrak or comparable locating systems.
• Experience using vacuum excavation equipment (hydrovac) to expose and verify underground utilities preferred.
• Strong understanding of underground utilities and directional drilling procedures.
• Ability to read utility markings and construction plans.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Reliable, detail-oriented, and safety-focused.

Pay: $33–$40 per hour
