Horizontal Directional Drill Operator

CM Cable LLC is an underground utility construction contractor specializing in fiber optic infrastructure and telecommunications projects throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington.

We are seeking a skilled, dependable, and safety-focused Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Operator to join our growing underground construction team.

Job Description:

The HDD Operator will be responsible for operating directional drilling equipment to complete underground utility installations safely, efficiently, and accurately. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with Ditch Witch and Vermeer drilling equipment and understands underground utility construction practices.

Responsibilities:

• Operate Ditch Witch and Vermeer horizontal directional drilling equipment.
• Perform underground drilling operations for fiber optic and telecommunications installations.
• Read and interpret utility markings, bore plans, and construction drawings.
• Coordinate with drill locators and ground crews to ensure accurate bore paths.
• Assist with potholing, utility exposure, and verification using vacuum excavation equipment as needed.
• Perform daily equipment inspections and routine maintenance.
• Identify potential underground hazards and maintain safe drilling practices.
• Maintain productivity while meeting company and project quality standards.
• Follow OSHA regulations and company safety procedures.

Requirements:

• 2+ years of horizontal directional drilling experience preferred.
• Experience operating both Ditch Witch and Vermeer drilling equipment.
• Experience operating vacuum excavation equipment (hydrovac) for potholing and safely exposing underground utilities preferred.
• Strong understanding of underground utility installation and construction safety.
• Ability to read and interpret utility locates and bore plans.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Dependable, safety-conscious, and able to work effectively with a crew.

Pay: $38–$45 per hour
