About Our Job The City of Vacaville is recruiting to fill current non benefited, part-time positions of Program Leader I and to establish a list of qualified applicants for possible future job openings. (Applications may be kept on file for 6 months.) Typical duties include leading and teaching participants; chaperoning participants on field trips; interacting with youth and participating in arts, crafts, games and sports; ensuring compliance with departmental policies and safety procedures; performing facility, site and equipment set-up, take down, and housekeeping; opening and closing facilities; distributing equipment, materials and supplies; assisting with sports officiating, coaching and scorekeeping; performing reception, cashiering, cash handling and recordkeeping duties.

Program Leaders are hired to work in a variety of City recreation programs and facilities including CAMP ADOBE, PAL (Police Activities League), TGIF, PrimeTime, Youth Sports, Adult Sports, Gymnastics, Tennis, Environmental Education, Preschool, Duke Center, Community Centers, Senior Center, Special Events and the CreekWalk.

About You Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: Program Leader I/II – None required

Experience Program Leader I - Some related work experience is required such as working in a recreation, sports, youth oriented, or classroom environment; working with the public of all ages; or performing customer service, cash handling and recordkeeping duties.

License or Certificate: Select positions may require the possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment. Must be at least 18 years of age if required to drive vehicles for City business.

Select positions require the ability to obtain CPR & First Aid Certificates within 30 days of hire.

Physical And Sensory Requirements Work requires sitting and standing; working both indoors and outside with exposure to heat, sunburn, weather, odors, dust and pollen; select positions may require moderate lifting up to 50 lbs.; carrying, bending, reaching, twisting, stooping, pulling and pushing up to 100 lbs. Work emphasizes speech, hearing and vision. Select positions may be assigned to work night and weekend hours.

Qualifications All applications will be reviewed for minimum qualifications and only the best qualified will be invited to continue in the examination process. The examination process may consist of an oral interview (weighted 100%). The process will evaluate the following areas:

Knowledge of: principles and practices of customer service; principles and practices of workplace safety; common cleaning equipment and products and basic mathematics.

Ability to: Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; relate well with members of the public including youth and their parents; understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; use sound judgement; plan, lead and teach participants independently; demonstrate leadership skills, responsibility, reliability, enthusiasm, and creativity; work in a busy environment; handle money accurately; maintain appropriate records; perform simple mathematical calculations; provide good customer service; perform physical tasks associated with the job; work with little direct supervision once tasks are learned; and be a self starter.

Part-time positions are paid an hourly rate and can work up to a maximum of 129 hours per month*. Part-time positions are at-will, are not eligible for health or retirement benefits (including CalPERS membership), and do not accrue leave time with the exception of state mandated sick leave (24 hours per year). Part-time positions are not covered by Social Security and are not eligible for the City of Vacaville's retirement plan through CalPERS and are therefore required to make 7.5% pre-tax contributions into a qualified plan under the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1990 (OBRA). For the City of Vacaville, the plan is a Section 457 Deferred Compensation Plan through Nationwide Retirement Systems, Inc.
