What they need

About Us

Medicana is a leading private healthcare provider known for delivering outstanding surgical and post-operative care. We offer a wide range of surgical specialties including orthopaedics, general surgery, ENT, pain and ophthalmology. Our recovery unit is a vital part of the patient journey, ensuring safe and comfortable transitions from anaesthesia to full consciousness.

Job Summary

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Housekeeper to join our hospital team. The Housekeeper is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, comfortable and welcoming environment for patients, visitors and staff across the hospital.

This is a patient-facing healthcare support role extending beyond routine cleaning. The Housekeeper will take ownership of the overall presentation and readiness of patient rooms and designated clinical and non-clinical areas, including room preparation, bed and linen management, replenishment of supplies and effective liaison with clinical and support teams.

The postholder will play an important role in the patient's experience of the hospital, ensuring that rooms and facilities are prepared to the required standard before admission, maintained throughout the patient's stay and appropriately reset following discharge.

This is an excellent opportunity to work within a high-standard private healthcare setting.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Room Preparation and Presentation

  • Prepare patient bedrooms and associated areas to the hospital's required standards before patient arrival.
  • Ensure patient rooms are clean, tidy, appropriately stocked and presented to a high standard.
  • Make and prepare patient beds, including changing bedding and responding to additional linen requirements.
  • Check that rooms have the appropriate supplies, toiletries, towels and other agreed patient amenities.
  • Ensure rooms are appropriately reset following patient discharge.
  • Identify and report maintenance issues, damage, defects or missing equipment promptly.
  • Ensure patient rooms are prepared within agreed turnaround times, particularly where there are planned admissions and discharges.
  • Maintain a calm, discreet and professional approach when working around patients and their visitors.

Cleaning and Infection Prevention

  • Undertake cleaning of patient rooms, corridors, communal areas and other designated areas in accordance with hospital procedures.
  • Follow prescribed cleaning schedules, methods and frequencies.
  • Apply appropriate infection prevention and control procedures at all times.
  • Use cleaning products and equipment safely and in accordance with manufacturer instructions and hospital policy.
  • Follow enhanced cleaning requirements where applicable, including after discharge or where additional precautions are required.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of hand hygiene and use personal protective equipment correctly.
  • Report any infection-control concerns or environmental risks to the appropriate person.

Linen Management

  • Manage the day-to-day movement, storage and replenishment of clean linen.
  • Ensure clean linen is stored appropriately and protected from contamination.
  • Collect and handle used/soiled linen in accordance with hospital procedures.
  • Monitor linen levels and communicate anticipated shortages to the Supervisor.
  • Ensure patient rooms and relevant departments have adequate supplies of appropriate linen.
  • Assist with linen stock rotation and stock checks.
  • Report damaged, missing or inadequate linen supplies.

Patient Experience and Hospitality

  • Contribute positively to the patient's overall experience of the hospital.
  • Provide a friendly, respectful and professional presence within patient areas.
  • Respond appropriately to reasonable patient requests within the boundaries of the role.
  • Prepare and provide agreed refreshments and beverages in accordance with hospital procedures.
  • Ensure patient-facing areas are welcoming, tidy and appropriately presented.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect patient dignity and privacy at all times.
  • Recognise when a patient request or concern needs to be referred to a nurse or other member of the clinical team.

Stock and Supplies

  • Monitor levels of cleaning materials, toiletries, linen, patient amenities and other housekeeping supplies.
  • Replenish supplies as required.
  • Maintain orderly and appropriate storage of housekeeping materials.
  • Inform the Supervisor of low stock, unusual consumption or supply issues.
  • Assist with stock counts and inventory checks.
  • Avoid unnecessary wastage and use resources responsibly.

Liaison with Clinical and Support Teams

  • Work closely with nursing and clinical teams to coordinate room preparation, cleaning and patient admissions/discharges.
  • Respond promptly to requests for room cleaning, preparation or additional housekeeping support.
  • Communicate effectively with reception, administration, facilities and other hospital departments.
  • Report environmental concerns or maintenance issues through the appropriate channels.
  • Ensure that clinical staff are informed where a room or area cannot be appropriately prepared within the required timeframe.
  • Maintain professional boundaries while developing effective working relationships across the hospital.

Health, Safety and Compliance

  • Comply with all hospital policies and procedures relevant to the role.
  • Follow health and safety, COSHH, infection prevention, fire safety and manual-handling requirements.
  • Use equipment correctly and report faults promptly.
  • Escalate hazards, spillages, damage or other risks immediately.
  • Participate in relevant training and competency assessments.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding patients, staff and hospital information.

Teamwork and Professional Standards

  • Work collaboratively with other Housekeepers and hospital colleagues.
  • Contribute to a positive and professional housekeeping culture.
  • Support colleagues during busy periods and periods of increased patient activity.
  • Maintain consistent standards throughout the working day.
  • Take responsibility for completing allocated duties within agreed timescales.
  • Assist with other reasonable housekeeping and patient-support duties appropriate to the role.

Essential:

  • Strong attention to detail.
  • High standards of cleanliness and presentation.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work discreetly and respectfully around patients.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and respond to changing requirements.
