What they need

Housing Support Worker – Supported Accommodation

Location: Birmingham
Job Type: Full-time
Salary: £14.00 - £17.00 per hour

The Role

We are looking for an experienced, highly capable and motivated Housing Support Worker to join our supported accommodation service in Birmingham.

This is a responsible and demanding role supporting vulnerable adults with a range of needs, including mental health difficulties, homelessness, tenancy sustainment, substance misuse, financial difficulties, social isolation and independent-living needs.

We are looking for someone who can take genuine ownership of their caseload, manage a high workload, use their own initiative and consistently deliver a high standard of support.

This position would suit someone who is compassionate but also highly organised, proactive, resilient and professionally accountable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of residents and take ownership of their ongoing support.
  • Deliver meaningful one-to-one support sessions focused on individual needs and outcomes.
  • Complete and regularly review support plans, needs assessments and risk assessments.
  • Maintain high-quality, detailed and timely case notes and support records.
  • Identify residents' needs and take appropriate action rather than simply recording concerns.
  • Support residents with mental health, housing, benefits, budgeting, appointments and independent-living skills.
  • Make referrals and work with external agencies and specialist services.
  • Liaise professionally with local authorities, housing providers, healthcare professionals and other organisations.
  • Identify and appropriately escalate safeguarding and risk concerns.
  • Manage challenging situations calmly and professionally.
  • Maintain clear professional boundaries.
  • Manage competing priorities and complete administrative requirements within deadlines.

What We Are Looking For

We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate maturity, initiative, strong judgement and a genuine desire to improve residents' lives.

Applicants should have relevant experience in supported housing, mental health, homelessness, social care, housing, community support or a similar field, OR strong transferable experience demonstrating the ability to perform effectively in this type of role.

Applicants educated to degree level, particularly in Psychology, Mental Health, Social Work, Sociology, Criminology, Health & Social Care or a related discipline, are also strongly encouraged to apply.

You will need:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong written English and professional record-keeping skills.
  • Excellent organisation and time management.
  • The ability to manage a demanding workload without compromising quality.
  • Confidence working independently and using your own initiative.
  • A good understanding of safeguarding and professional boundaries.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with residents and professionals.
  • Emotional resilience and confidence dealing with challenging situations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Good IT and administrative skills.
  • Reliability, professionalism and personal accountability.

Experience within Supported Exempt Accommodation is desirable but not essential.

The Person

We are looking for more than someone who can complete support paperwork.

We want someone who will build professional relationships with residents, identify what support is genuinely required, follow actions through and help residents make measurable progress towards greater stability and independence.

This role carries significant responsibility, and we are therefore looking for candidates who take pride in the quality of their work and are comfortable being accountable for their own caseload.

In return, we are offering a competitive salary that reflects the level of responsibility and the calibre of candidate we are seeking.

Appointment will be subject to satisfactory references, right-to-work checks and an appropriate DBS check.
