What they need

Job Overview

Skills Over School Project CIC is a small, welcoming alternative education and youth provision based in Redruth.

We support young people aged approximately 11–16, particularly those who are neurodivergent, experience emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA), or find traditional educational environments challenging.

Our approach is different. We believe young people thrive when they feel safe, understood, respected and involved in their own learning.

We focus on confidence, wellbeing, relationships, practical life skills and real-world experiences rather than a one-size-fits-all approach to education.

The role

We’re looking for a friendly, reliable and enthusiastic Hub Support Worker to join our small team.

You’ll work alongside our Hub Lead and Director, supporting young people during activities, encouraging participation and helping create a calm, positive environment.

This is a hands-on support role, not a management position.

Initially, the position will be for one day per week during term time, with the potential to increase to three days per week as our provision develops, subject to demand and funding.

Your responsibilities

  • Support young people during practical, creative, educational and social activities.
  • Build positive, trusting and professional relationships with young people.
  • Help neurodivergent learners participate in ways that suit their individual needs.
  • Encourage independence, confidence and emotional wellbeing.
  • Support young people who may experience anxiety, emotional dysregulation or difficulty engaging.
  • Assist with setting up activities, maintaining the learning environment and general Hub tasks.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and follow individual support plans and risk assessments.
  • Follow safeguarding, health and safety, confidentiality and behaviour-support procedures.
  • Support occasional outdoor and community-based activities where appropriate.

About you

We’re more interested in finding the right person than somebody with a long list of qualifications.

You will ideally be:

  • Patient, kind, approachable and non-judgemental.
  • Comfortable working with neurodivergent young people.
  • Calm and supportive when situations become challenging.
  • Flexible, practical and willing to get involved.
  • Reliable, professional and a good team player.
  • Respectful of young people’s individuality, choices and communication styles.
  • Able to follow safeguarding procedures and maintain appropriate professional boundaries.

Previous experience in SEND, alternative provision, youth work, education or support work would be an advantage, but we welcome applicants with relevant transferable skills and the right attitude.

What we offer

  • A friendly, supportive and genuinely inclusive working environment.
  • Small groups of young people.
  • The opportunity to make a meaningful difference.
  • Varied, creative and practical activities.
  • Term-time working hours.
  • The potential for additional working days as the organisation grows.

Safeguarding

Skills Over School Project CIC is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

The successful applicant will be required to undergo appropriate pre-employment safeguarding checks, including an enhanced DBS check with children’s barred list information where legally eligible and appropriate to the role, satisfactory references and verification of the right to work in the UK.

How to apply

Please apply through Indeed with your CV and a short statement explaining why you would like to work with young people at Skills Over School Project CIC.

We particularly welcome applicants who understand that different young people need different approaches — and that’s absolutely fine.
