What they need

Human Resources Advisor

The Whakapapa whānau are a small but ambitious team, running year-round operations on the northern slopes of Mt Ruapehu. In winter, from June until October, this includes a world-class ski area. In summer, from December until April, this includes our summer sightseeing operation, heroing our iconic Sky Waka gondola. Each year we welcome hundreds of thousands of manuhiri (guests) to Whakapapa, many with life-long connections to the maunga (mountain) and surrounding region, some even third or fourth generation.

Mō te tūnga | About the role

No two days are the same at Whakapapa.

We’re looking for an experienced Human Resources Advisor to join our Business Services team and support our leaders and people across Whakapapa.

This is a broad, hands-on HR role in a unique and highly seasonal environment. Our workforce grows significantly each winter, so you’ll play an important role across the seasonal workforce cycle – from recruitment and onboarding through to in-season support and end-of-season processes.

This role is based onsite at Whakapapa Ski Area on Mt Ruapehu and is not a remote or hybrid position. The successful candidate will need to be based in, or willing to relocate to, the wider Ruapehu region and be able to work onsite at Whakapapa.

You’ll provide practical day-to-day HR advice and support to leaders, coordinate recruitment and workforce activities, support employee relations and performance processes, and help ensure our HR systems, processes and employment practices are working effectively.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing practical day-to-day HR advice and support to leaders and employees.
  • Supporting leaders to apply HR policies, procedures and employment practices consistently.
  • Coordinating end-to-end recruitment and onboarding across permanent, fixed-term, casual and seasonal roles.
  • Supporting seasonal workforce planning, recruitment and workforce administration activities.
  • Preparing employment agreements, variations and other employment documentation.
  • Supporting routine employee relations, attendance and performance management processes, with more complex matters escalated as appropriate.
  • Coordinating employee lifecycle activities and maintaining accurate HR systems and employee records.
  • Assisting with onboarding logistics and seasonal workforce administration, including uniform coordination support where required.
  • Coordinating training, compliance records and people-related initiatives.
  • Supporting ACC administration and coordinating drug and alcohol testing processes.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve HR systems, processes and the employee experience.
  • Building strong relationships with leaders and employees across Whakapapa and championing our values and culture.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako ōu | Your skills and experience

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • A minimum of two years’ experience in an HR role supporting a seasonal workforce, ideally within the ski industry.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting seasonal workforce activities, including recruitment, onboarding and workforce coordination through periods of significant workforce growth and change.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of New Zealand employment legislation and HR practices.
  • Experience providing practical HR advice and support to leaders and employees.
  • Experience supporting employee relations, attendance and performance management processes.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced and highly seasonal environment.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Sound judgement and the ability to recognise when matters need to be escalated.
  • Experience using HR, payroll or other business systems would be beneficial.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Human Resources, Business, Employment Relations or a related discipline is desirable.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou | What we offer

  • Gear up for the ultimate work adventure at Whakapapa. Joining Whakapapa unlocks a number of perks:
  • A complimentary season pass for skiing and / or snowboarding, and access to day pass discounts for friends and family
  • Free beginner and intermediate group lessons. Don't have equipment? You'll receive discounts on that too
  • Exclusive food and beverage, and retail discounts, for use in Whakapapa's cafes and store
  • Guaranteed base hours for all full-time and part-time staff
  • Priority access and discounts to our on-mountain medical centre services

Your Whakapapa whānau experience is not just a job: you will build lifelong memories and experiences in one of the most beautiful and culturally significant places on earth!

Location: Whakapapa Ski Area, Mt Ruapehu
Employment: Permanent, full-time
Minimum guaranteed hours: 40 hours per week
Remuneration: $75,000 – $85,000 per annum, depending on skills and experience
