About Us

Microbe Farmers is a 1-acre living-soil greenhouse in West Virginia growing premium herbs and greens with natural methods. We are a small, growing team, and we need someone on site who owns the people side of the farm.

The Role

You will be the go-to person for every employee at the greenhouse. You will hire, onboard, handle employee issues, and keep us compliant with employment law. This is a hands-on role for someone who likes building structure where there is not much yet. You will work closely with the Greenhouse Manager, the Operations Manager, and the Greenhouse Assistant.

What You Will Do

• Run hiring from start to finish: post job ads, screen, interview, check references, make offers, and coordinate background checks
• Manage, edit and approve timesheets for all employees as well as time off and coverage.
• Onboard new hires so they know their job, their schedule, and the rules on day one
• Be the first stop for employee concerns, conflicts, and complaints, and resolve them on site
• Investigate complaints of harassment, bullying, threats, or misconduct, document what you find, and recommend action
• Handle coaching, written warnings, suspensions, and terminations the right way, with clear documentation
• Keep the farm compliant with federal and West Virginia employment law: wage and hour, workers' comp, safety reporting, and required postings
• Keep employee files, the Employee Manual, and policies up to date, and propose changes when issues come up
• Manage staffing agency relationships and move agency workers to direct hire when needed
• Track turnover, attendance, and injuries, and report trends to leadership
• Support the safety program: incident reports, workers' comp claims, and follow-up
• Answer employee questions about policies, raises, and Rippling

What We Are Looking For

• 2+ years in HR, ideally as a generalist or the only HR person at a small company
• Experience hiring and supporting hourly, frontline, agricultural, or manufacturing teams
• Working knowledge of employment law (FLSA, Title VII, ADA, OSHA basics, workers' comp)
• Calm, fair, and direct in tough conversations. You can de-escalate conflict and still hold people accountable
• Organized, with strong writing and documentation habits
• Comfortable with HRIS software (we use Rippling)
• Able to work on site in rural West Virginia
• Nice to have: SHRM-CP, PHR, or similar, and experience in agriculture or a small business
