What they need

About the Company

DDM Construction is a family-owned heavy civil contractor serving North Texas since 1995. We self-perform concrete paving, underground utilities, earthwork, bridges and wall structures for municipal, county, state, federal and private clients. Together with our sister companies we employ 240+ people, and DDM has grown 30%+ each of the last four years. At DDM, we build more than roads; we build lasting trust and infrastructure our communities depend on.

Job Summary

The Human Resources Manager runs DDM's HR function end to end and is the company's in-house HR expert from day one. The role owns recruiting, onboarding, compliance, employee relations, performance management, benefits and HR records for a fast-growing field and office workforce. It also builds the written HR policies and SOPs the company currently lacks, and uses AI tools to run HR efficiently.

  • Reports to: President
  • Location: On-site, DDM office in Lake Dallas, TX, with regular jobsite visits across North Texas. This is not a remote role.
  • Classification: Full-time, exempt

Key Responsibilities

Recruiting & Onboarding

  • Run full-cycle recruiting for field and office roles: postings, sourcing, screening, interview coordination, offers and background checks.
  • Partner with operations to forecast crew and staff needs against awarded work and keep a pipeline for critical roles.
  • Own new-hire paperwork, employee setup and onboarding, including I-9 and E-Verify, so every employee is complete before day one.
  • Maintain compliant, current job descriptions for every position.

Compliance & Records

  • Keep DDM compliant with federal and Texas employment law: FLSA (including overtime for hourly field employees), FMLA, ADA, Title VII, ACA and EEO.
  • Support prevailing wage and certified payroll requirements on public work with accounting.
  • Maintain the HR module in DDM's ERP (Viewpoint Vista): enter and keep accurate new hires, pay rates, deductions, benefit elections and terminations so weekly payroll runs correctly. Accounting collects, enters and processes time cards and runs weekly payroll.
  • Manage unemployment claims, wage complaints and agency inquiries, documented and on deadline.
  • Maintain confidential personnel, medical and I-9 files, kept properly separated.

Employee Relations & Retention

  • Investigate and resolve employee complaints fairly, consistently and with documentation.
  • Advise managers on discipline, performance improvement plans and terminations.
  • Conduct stay and exit interviews and report turnover by trade, tenure and supervisor; focus on employees who quit.
  • Develop retention and engagement initiatives that support DDM's turnover KPIs.

Performance, Training & Development

  • Run the annual review cycle and keep evaluations on schedule.
  • Track required training, licenses and certifications company-wide.
  • Support career paths and promotions from crew level to management.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Administer benefits and open enrollment; shop benefits with the broker at least annually.
  • Provide market pay data to support compensation decisions approved by the CEO.

Policies, SOPs & HR Systems

  • Write, maintain and train managers on DDM's HR SOPs and employee handbook.
  • Keep the HR system, employee directory and org charts accurate.
  • Use AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT or similar) daily to draft policies, job postings, letters and reports, analyze HR data and automate routine work, while following DDM's rules for confidential data.

Safety Department Support

  • Maintain the personnel-side records Safety relies on: new-hire orientation scheduling, training records and workers' compensation paperwork. The safety program, EMR and the Safety Manager report to Safety leadership, not HR.

Culture & Office

  • Champion a culture of accountability, respect and retention; lead at least three company events per year.
  • Supervise the part-time receptionist: coverage, scheduling, training and evaluation.

Qualifications

Required

  • 5+ years of progressive HR generalist experience, including at least 2 years working under an established HR Manager or HR Director.
  • Working knowledge of federal and Texas employment law at hire: FLSA, FMLA, ADA, Title VII, ACA, I-9/E-Verify and unemployment claims.
  • Hands-on experience with recruiting, onboarding, investigations, terminations and benefits administration.
  • Has written or rebuilt HR policies, SOPs or an employee handbook.
  • Comfortable using AI platforms such as Claude or ChatGPT in daily work, and able to show examples of how they have used them to work faster or better.
  • Sound judgment and discretion with confidential information.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 and an ERP or HRIS HR module; Viewpoint Vista experience is a plus.

Preferred

  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR or SPHR certification.
  • HR experience in construction or another field-based workforce (oil and gas, trucking, manufacturing).
  • Familiarity with prevailing wage and certified payroll on public work.
  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, business or a related field. An active SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR or SPHR certification, or 4+ additional years of HR experience, may substitute for a degree.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Pay: $100,000.00 - $145,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • 401(k)
  • Dental insurance
  • Health insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Vision insurance

Education:

  • Bachelor's (Preferred)

Experience:

  • Human Resources: 5 years (Required)
  • working under an established HR Manager: 2 years (Required)

Work Location: In person
