Since 2007, Urban Organics has created thoughtful, design-forward catering and events across the San Francisco Bay Area, Napa, and beyond. We’re a boutique luxury hospitality company known for seasonal food, beautiful presentation, and the kind of care guests remember. Behind every event is a team of about 30 chefs, hospitality professionals, and producers who make it all happen, and we take care of them the way they take care of our clients.

The Role

We’re looking for an experienced HR professional to become our in-house HR lead. This is a true ownership role. You’ll run day-to-day HR from start to finish, build systems that last, and be a trusted, steady presence for our team. You’ll report directly to our Founder and CEO and work alongside our external HR consultants on complex or specialized matters.

What You’ll Own

Hiring and onboarding

• Write and post job openings, coordinate interviews, and prepare offer letters
• Run onboarding from start to finish, including I-9s, new hire paperwork, and Gusto setup
• Keep onboarding checklists and templates up to date

Training and compliance

• Track and manage required California training, including sexual harassment prevention, to 100 percent completion
• Support our workplace safety programs (IIPP and WVPP), including employee communication and recordkeeping
• Monitor wage and hour practices, including meal and rest breaks, paid sick leave, and pay changes
• Manage San Francisco Health Care Security Ordinance tracking and quarterly reporting
• Keep federal, state, and local labor law posters current, including for remote employees

Employee records and HR operations

• Maintain organized, compliant personnel files and recordkeeping
• Document pay, position, and status changes accurately in Gusto
• Serve as the main point of contact for employee questions and HR needs

Offboarding

• Manage separations with care and compliance, including California final pay timing and required notices

What You Bring

• 5+ years of HR experience, including hands-on California employment law and compliance
• Experience as a solo HR lead, or leading HR for a small or mid-sized business
• Comfort with Gusto or a similar HR and payroll platform
• Excellent organization, follow-through, and discretion
• Warmth, steady judgment, and the ability to build trust with every level of the team

Nice to Have

• Background in hospitality, restaurants, catering, or events
• Bilingual in English and Spanish
• SHRM or HRCI certification

The Details

• Location: Office in downtown Lafayette, CA
• Schedule: Part-time, 20–25 hours per week, weekdays only. No evenings or weekends required
• Pay: $45–$60/hour, based on experience, plus mileage reimbursement for work travel
• Benefits: Laptop, Cell phone stipend, 401(k) plan, paid sick leave, and HQ snacks and barista bar
• Time to recharge: We close for major holidays, including the Fourth of July, the full week of Thanksgiving, and two weeks over Christmas and New Year’s
