What they need

HVAC R&D Engineer

Performance Objectives

  • Design and validate next-generation HVAC and refrigeration systems that meet or exceed target COP, water-use, and reliability metrics within 12–18-month development cycles.
  • Select, specify, and optimize compressors, heat exchangers, fans, coils, and valves to achieve predicted prototype performance on first test.
  • Analyze refrigeration-cycle behavior, identify performance losses, and implement design changes that improve efficiency and reduce refrigerant charge.
  • Lead prototype builds and laboratory testing, document results, close performance gaps, and release production-ready drawings and BOMs on schedule.
  • Collaborate with controls, electrical, and manufacturing teams to ensure designs are buildable, serviceable, and compliant with applicable codes.
  • Translate field and customer feedback into prioritized engineering changes that improve product reliability and reduce lifecycle costs.

Environment & Resources

Report to R&D or Design Engineering leadership and work within a cross-functional product team spanning controls, manufacturing, quality, and product management. Access laboratory test facilities, CAD tools, calibrated instrumentation, and established QMS processes. Occasional travel to factories and customer sites is required.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, plus 3–5 years of experience designing commercial or industrial HVAC/refrigeration systems in a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to model and optimize vapor-compression cycles and select major components for efficiency and reliability.
  • Experience taking complex, multi-part assemblies from concept through prototype testing to production release.
  • Ability to interpret electrical diagrams and work with control strategies; familiarity with CAD and parts-list generation.
  • Strong laboratory testing, troubleshooting, and documentation skills, with clear written and verbal communication across technical and non-technical teams.

Role Selling Points

  • Direct impact on energy- and water-efficient products used in data centers and other mission-critical applications.
  • Sustainability-focused organization with a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and employee development.
  • Competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, 401(k) matching, tuition support, and flexible scheduling.
  • Advanced laboratory facilities, modern engineering tools, and opportunities to develop innovative products rather than focus solely on incremental maintenance.

Engineer climate solutions that improve energy and water efficiency in mission-critical applications.
