What they need

Foleys is looking for an experienced Hydraulic & Design Engineer to join our Estimating and Design team and play a key role in delivering high-quality hydraulic and mechanical building services solutions across our national operations.

This is a hands-on technical role for an experienced engineer who enjoys being involved from concept through to detailed design, coordination and certification, while also providing technical leadership and expertise across the wider Foleys business.

The Role

You’ll be responsible for the end-to-end delivery of hydraulic and mechanical building services designs across commercial and industrial projects. This will include:

  • Developing detailed hydraulic and mechanical building services designs.
  • Producing drawings, schematics, specifications and technical documentation using CAD/BIM software.
  • Completing detailed drafting and modelling as part of project delivery.
  • Designing and coordinating mechanical services, including HVAC, ventilation, heating and cooling where required.
  • Providing CPEng engineering oversight and preparing and signing Producer Statements (PS1).
  • Reviewing designs for compliance with the NZ Building Code, relevant standards and council requirements.
  • Developing alternative solutions and supporting complex consent pathways where required.
  • Coordinating hydraulic and mechanical services with architectural, structural, electrical and other disciplines.
  • Managing clashes and design conflicts through BIM coordination.
  • Liaising with councils, Building Consent Authorities, consultants, clients and project teams.
  • Providing technical guidance on complex design matters and supporting practical, buildable solutions.

Technical Leadership

This role will be a key technical resource for hydraulic and mechanical design across Foleys nationally.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Act as the technical point of contact for hydraulic and mechanical design.
  • Support and mentor junior designers and BIM team members.
  • Review design quality and consistency across projects.
  • Develop and improve design processes, standards and templates.
  • Share technical knowledge and expertise across our national branch network.
  • Help ensure our designs are practical, compliant, cost-effective and buildable.

About You

We’re looking for an experienced engineer who brings strong technical capability, sound judgement and a practical understanding of how design translates into outcomes on site.

To be successful in this role, you’ll have:

  • CPEng registration.
  • At least 10 years' professional engineering experience.
  • An engineering degree in Mechanical, Civil, Building Services or a related discipline.
  • At least 10 years' experience in engineering, with strong demonstrated experience in hydraulic building services design.
  • Experience preparing and signing Producer Statements (PS1).
  • Strong knowledge of the NZ Building Code and relevant hydraulic and mechanical services standards.
  • Demonstrated mechanical design capability, including HVAC and building services systems.
  • Strong CAD/BIM capability.
  • Experience working on commercial and/or industrial projects.
  • Excellent communication, coordination and stakeholder management skills.
  • The ability to develop practical, cost-conscious and buildable design solutions.
  • The confidence to provide technical leadership and make sound engineering decisions.

Why Foleys?

At Foleys, we’re a multi-trade building services business with teams across New Zealand. We combine technical expertise with practical trade experience, and we’re continuing to grow our design and engineering capability nationally.
