The Role

We are seeking an experienced Hydraulics & Mechanical Engineer – Team Leader to join a specialist marine ship repair and maintenance business in France.

This is a hands-on, production-based role , working directly in the shipyard and onboard vessels. You will carry out mechanical and hydraulic engineering work, diagnose faults, oversee installation and commissioning, and lead a team of 3–4 technicians .

This is not a design or office-based role . You will work directly with tools, equipment, technical drawings and hydraulic schematics, while providing technical direction to the team.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and delegate work to a team of 3–4 technicians.
• Carry out hands-on hydraulic and mechanical installation, repair, maintenance and commissioning.
• Diagnose faults and develop practical repair solutions.
• Read and interpret hydraulic schematics, engineering drawings and technical documentation.
• Install, dismantle, repair and recommission marine equipment.
• Test and commission hydraulic and mechanical systems.
• Ensure work is completed safely, efficiently and to a high technical standard.
• Liaise with vessel crews, shipyard teams and subcontractors as required.

Hydraulic Expertise

Strong practical experience across:

• Hydraulic power packs / power stations
• Hydraulic pumps, motors and cylinders
• Valves / distributors
• Accumulators
• Hoses and pipework
• Hydraulic oil circuits and filtration
• Hydraulic system optimisation
• Fault diagnosis, testing and commissioning

Marine & Deck Equipment

Experience with marine equipment such as:

• Winches, capstans and windlasses
• Cranes, davits and lifting equipment
• Anchoring equipment
• Thrusters and stabilisers
• Hydraulic ramps and cardecks
• Gangways / passerelles
• Hatch covers and watertight doors
• Lifts and elevating platforms

Mechanical Expertise

Strong hands-on mechanical experience including:

• Mechanical assemblies and components
• Bearings and shafts
• Pumps and auxiliary machinery
• Mechanical alignment and installation
• Mechanical fault-finding and repair
• Bespoke/fabricated mechanical components
• On-site machining and boring

Candidate Profile

We are looking for a senior hands-on marine engineer with strong hydraulic and mechanical expertise and previous experience leading technicians.

The ideal candidate will be able to diagnose the problem, read the drawings, carry out the engineering work, direct the technicians and commission the finished system.

Essential

• Minimum 10 years' professional experience in marine mechanical and hydraulic engineering.
• Strong hands-on experience with hydraulic systems and marine equipment.
• Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting ability.
• Ability to read hydraulic schematics and engineering drawings.
• Previous experience leading or supervising technicians.
• Comfortable working onboard vessels and within a shipyard environment.
• Practical, technically confident and capable of working independently.
• Fluent English language skills.

Desirable

• Ship repair, refit or maintenance experience.
• Superyacht, commercial or naval vessel experience.
• Experience with deck machinery, cranes, winches, davits, thrusters or stabilisers.
• On-site machining / boring experience.
• French language skills – beneficial but not mandatory.
