The Role

TMC Construction is looking for an Improver Carpenter to join our growing team, working across high-quality residential renovations, extensions and new-build projects.

We're looking for someone who already has a good grounding in carpentry and construction and can carry out straightforward work independently, but wants to continue developing their skills alongside experienced carpenters and site foremen.

This would suit someone who has completed an apprenticeship, is nearing the end of one, or has gained several years of practical site experience and is looking to progress towards becoming a fully competent carpenter.

This is not an apprentice position. You'll be expected to contribute productively from day one, while continuing to develop your skills on more technical and detailed work.

The Work

Our projects are varied and the role will include:

• First-fix carpentry
• Second-fix carpentry
• Timber framing
• Roof structures
• Joists and flooring
• Studwork
• Doors, linings, skirting and architraves
• External timberwork and cladding
• Installation of structural steelwork
• Insulation
• Plasterboarding and drylining
• General construction
• Reading drawings and setting out
• Supporting experienced carpenters on more intricate work

As your ability develops, you'll be given increasingly complex work and greater responsibility.

What We're Looking For

We're not expecting a finished carpenter. That's why we're recruiting at improver level.

We are expecting someone with solid basic ability who can use their initiative, understand instructions and complete straightforward tasks without needing constant supervision.

Quality is extremely important to us. You need to care about the finished product and be prepared to put something right if it doesn't meet the required standard.

Reliability, attitude and work ethic are non-negotiable.

You MUST:

• Have previous carpentry and site experience
• Have your own carpentry hand and power tools
• Hold a full driving licence
• Have your own reliable transport
• Be able to travel independently to different projects
• Be competent using standard carpentry tools
• Be punctual and reliable
• Take pride in your work
• Be willing to learn and take constructive feedback
• Keep a clean and organised working area
• Work well as part of a team

Progression

We're building our team for the long term.

The objective isn't for the right person to remain an Improver Carpenter indefinitely. We want to develop you into a highly capable carpenter who can work independently and eventually take responsibility for your own work and other members of the team.

As your ability, productivity and responsibility increase, your rate will increase with them.

There is genuine scope to progress within TMC Construction for someone who proves themselves.
