What they need

About Us

Southern Cross Fertilisers runs Phosphate Hill and the Mount Isa Acid Plant. We are two operations in North West Queensland that depend on each other, and that our neighbours and the region depend on too. The fertiliser we make supports Australian farmers and helps put food on tables here and overseas.

We are Australian. We are resilient, diverse, invested and proud.

How we work matters to us. Safety is not a slogan here. It's how we run every shift, and production never comes ahead of it. Our plants run on standards, not heroics: planned work, predictable tonnes, doing what we say we'll do and when something goes wrong, we look at the system before the person. People here report openly because the focus is on improvement, not blame.

We're an operation with a great reputation, and we back our people with meaningful work and high levels of ownership.

About The Role

A frontline member of the Phosphate Hill Emergency Response Team (ERT), you'll keep the site's emergency response capability ready to act, safely and rapidly, on fire, medical, rescue and chemical emergency scenarios. The role combines hands-on operational response with a disciplined approach to training, equipment readiness and documentation, and is central to building an emergency response function that meets world-class standards: dependable in a genuine emergency, well trained, well equipped and continuously improving. Reporting to the Health & Safety Superintendent, you'll work a FIFO 8/6 roster departing Townsville and take part in the 24-hour on-call roster that provides continuous emergency and medical response coverage for Phosphate Hill. This is an individual contributor role, based at Phosphate Hill Operations in North West Queensland.

Key Responsibilities

  • Frontline emergency and incident response across fire, medical, rescue, confined space and chemical scenarios
  • 24-hour on-call coverage and support to incident controllers during significant events
  • Training, drills and capability development for the Emergency Response Team and wider workforce
  • Emergency equipment readiness, systems and documentation
  • Occupational health support, including first aid and initial medical response
  • Zero Harm safety leadership and Rules to Live By compliance
  • Teamwork, communication and reporting, including security support

About You

Essential:

  • 5–7 years' experience in emergency response, firefighting, rescue or paramedical work, ideally in a mining, chemical/mineral processing or heavy engineering environment
  • Cert IV Public Safety (Firefighting Operations) or equivalent
  • Occupational First Aid (or Provide Advanced First Aid) qualification
  • Confined Space Rescue and Vertical Rescue competencies
  • Current unencumbered 'HR' Class Driver's Licence
  • Ability and willingness to work a 24-hour on-call / rotating roster

Highly desirable:

  • Cert IV in Workplace Trainer and Assessor (TAE40116 or equivalent)
  • Cert IV Health Care (Ambulance), or willingness to obtain
  • Diploma of Public Safety (Fire Fighting Management)
  • Familiarity with site business systems (e.g. SAP) and Microsoft Office

Benefits To You

  • A team that shows up for each other
  • Salary packaging options
  • Confidential employee assistance program
  • Mental health and wellbeing program
  • 18 weeks paid parental leave for primary carer, 3 weeks for secondary carer
  • Superannuation paid on unpaid parental leave, up to 12 months
  • Real opportunities for career progression through succession planning and development

Everyone Gets a Fair Go

We want people from different backgrounds, experiences and walks of life. It makes us a better operation and a better place to work. We're building a workplace that is safe and fair for everyone, with flexible work options that let our people do good work and have a life outside it. If that sounds like you, we'd like to hear from you.

About Our Process

Our recruitment process usually involves an interview (Teams or face to face), reference checks and a medical. Depending on the role, it may also include a site visit and psychometric testing.
