What they need

Industrial Coating Spray Operator

Core Responsibilities

  • Surface Preparation & Masking: Clean, degrease, and grit-blast precision metal components to achieve specified anchor profiles for coating adhesion. Apply complex hard tooling, custom fixtures, tape, or metal masks to protect areas that must remain uncoated based on blueprints.
  • Equipment Operation & Programming: Setup and operate specialized thermal spray systems, including automated spray equipment, curing ovens, finishing machines, robots and mixing equipment. Monitor, program, and load raw material feeders and robotic spray parameters from external control consoles.
  • In-Process Quality Inspection: Read blueprints, engineering drawings, and job travelers to verify technical requirements. Utilize precision measurement tools—such as micrometers, calipers, profilometers, and thickness gauges—to inspect parts and confirm strict dimensional tolerances.
  • Coating Application: Mix chemical formulations, set up equipment (such as spray guns or thermal spray systems), and apply ceramic coatings, sealants, or paint-protection layers evenly.
  • Equipment Operation & Calibration: Adjust air pressure, flow rates, and machine dials, and perform routine maintenance on spray booths, guns, and curing ovens.
  • Quality Control & Inspection: Measure coating thickness with precision instruments, inspect for streaks, defects, or "high spots," and perform touch-ups.
  • Documentation & Safety: Record production data, maintain safety compliance (OSHA standards, chemical handling, and PPE), and clean work areas.

· Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine preventive maintenance and minor troubleshooting on spray guns, conveyors, robotic cells, blast cabinets, and gas/fuel lines.

Key Skills & Technical Requirements

  • Mechanical Aptitude: Experience running industrial machinery, spray systems, grinders, or automated robotic cells.
  • Blueprint Reading: Strong ability to interpret industrial engineering sketches, routers, and cross-sectional technical drawings.
  • Precision Measuring: Mastery of hand-held inspection tools (e.g., micrometers, vernier calipers, or dial indicators).
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for long shifts, lift up to 50 lbs, and work comfortably inside confined spaces or enclosed spray booths. Must be able to pass a respirator fit test and wear full personal protective equipment (PPE), including supplied-air respirators and heavy protective jumpsuits.
  • Technical Proficiency: Experience with buffing, polishing, paint correction tools, and industrial or automotive spray equipment.
  • Attention to Detail: High precision to prevent streaks, missed spots, or uneven coverage on high-value parts or vehicle finishes.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to stand, bend, kneel, reach, and work around elevated platforms or spray booths for extended periods.
  • Education & Certifications: High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training, manufacturer-specific coating certifications, or OSHA safety training are often preferred.

Preferred Qualifications & Certifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or vocational technical certificate.
  • 1–3 years of experience in thermal spray processes, aerospace MRO, or heavy manufacturing environments.
