What they need

Join the service shaping Sheffield’s digital future. IT and Digital Innovation combines secure and resilient technology with accessible service design, data, innovation and major programme delivery. Our work ranges from modernising business systems and improving customer journeys to using artificial intelligence, automation and emerging technology to transform how the Council operates and delivers services for residents, businesses and staff.

Application Development and Support

The Applications Development and Support Service provides specialist application support, technical expertise and service development for the systems that enable Sheffield City Council and schools to deliver high-quality education services. We work closely with schools, education teams, partners and suppliers to ensure critical education systems are reliable, secure and effective, supporting statutory responsibilities, operational delivery and improved outcomes for children and young people.

Our work includes:

  • Supporting and maintaining core education systems, including Management Information Systems (MIS), admissions, SEND, attendance and related applications.

  • Providing technical expertise, system administration and application support to schools, academies and Council services.

  • Managing system upgrades, configuration changes and application lifecycle activities to ensure services remain secure and effective.

  • Working with education providers and partners to implement new technologies and improve digital processes.

  • Delivering data integration, reporting and information sharing solutions to support operational and strategic decision-making.

  • Supporting statutory education functions through the effective management of pupil, school and education-related information systems.

  • Providing advice, guidance and training to system users, helping schools and services maximise the value of their technology investments.

  • Managing relationships with software suppliers, ensuring service quality, contract compliance and continuous improvement.

  • Supporting digital transformation initiatives that improve efficiency, reduce administrative burden and enhance user experience.

  • Ensuring education applications comply with information governance, cyber security and data protection requirements while providing resilient and reliable services.

This service plays a key role in enabling schools and education services to deliver high-quality, data-driven and customer-focused outcomes for children, young people and families across Sheffield.

About the role

As an Information Systems Officer, you will provide specialist support for applications used to deliver essential Council services. You will investigate system, access and data issues, manage user permissions, support system changes and testing, and provide guidance and training to users.

This is more than a traditional IT helpdesk role. You will analyse problems, identify safe and practical solutions, and prioritise work according to risk and service impact. You will also work with service teams, ICT colleagues and software suppliers to resolve complex issues and improve how systems are used.

The role involves handling sensitive information and supporting systems which may affect statutory casework, safeguarding, reporting and financial processes. You will therefore need strong problem-solving and communication skills, excellent attention to detail, and a clear understanding of confidentiality and data protection.

We are looking for someone with experience of supporting applications, databases or information systems who can explain technical information clearly, manage competing priorities and work confidently using their own initiative

We anticipate interviewing for this role w/c 7thDecember.

We are investing in our workforce and are promoting opportunities to our under-represented groups. We value equality, diversity and inclusion and are focused on increasing the diversity of our workforce, particularly the number of Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic, Disabled and LGBTQ+ people, so that our teams reflect the communities in the city we serve. We are also supporting staff with unpaid caring responsibilities to work flexibly.

It is a great time to join us and we welcome your application.

Under the Guaranteed Interview scheme, applicants who are disabled, care leavers, or armed forces veterans will be guaranteed an interview if they meet the essential criteria and indicate their eligibility on the application form. Sometimes, if lots of people apply, we might not be able to interview everyone who qualifies for the Guarantee. In these cases, we’ll interview the candidates who best meet the essential criteria for the job.

Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the Council, including reduced hour contracts, working part time or as a job share.

If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide payslip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.

Equality of pay is extremely important to us. All roles at Sheffield City Council are going through an evaluation process which may result in changes to some pay arrangements from 2026. Read about the new job evaluation process to be introduced at Sheffield City Council.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all individuals, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for everyone and where appropriate to the role the successful applicant will be required to undertake relevant safeguarding checks.
