What they need
About us
PureLink is a New Zealand owned ISP. We provide fibre, fixed wireless, 4G/5G, SD-WAN and VoIP to businesses and homes around the country, and we run the whole thing ourselves. Our own core, our own kit, our own engineers. When something breaks at 2am, there's no vendor in another country to blame. That's a bit terrifying and also the reason the job is interesting.
We're part of a small group of technology companies. Cloud Torque does managed IT, Microsoft 365, Azure and security. InfraLink does the physical side: structured cabling, rack and stack, AV fit-outs. So the infrastructure around here starts with fibre in the ground and finishes with a platform running on top of it, and you'll get to see all of it. Most engineers spend a decade seeing one slice.
The role
You'll be building and running production infrastructure alongside our network, systems and field engineers.
The work moves around a lot. One week you might be planning a core migration, the next you're up a hill at a wireless site with a console cable and questionable weather, and the week after that you're writing a script to kill a job everyone hates doing by hand. We'd rather you learned by doing the actual work with someone experienced sitting next to you than by reading a wiki and hoping.
Roughly, the job covers:
Building things. Configuring and deploying routers, switches, firewalls and wireless gear, on our network and on customer sites. Site turn-ups, upgrades, migrations, and going out with the field team for installs and commissioning.
Keeping things running. Watching network and infrastructure health so we find problems before customers ring us about them. Picking up faults escalated from the service desk and owning them until they're actually fixed. Firmware, patching and lifecycle so the estate doesn't quietly rot. Documentation and diagrams that people can trust, which we'll admit is an ongoing project.
Making things better. If you spot something repetitive and automate it, that's a win here, not a distraction from your real job. Same goes for tuning monitoring so we get fewer useless alerts. You'll also have a say in how we standardise infrastructure across the group.
Talking to customers. Handling escalated network queries by phone, email and ticket, and keeping people informed during faults and planned work. Nobody here likes being left in the dark by a supplier, so we try not to do it to others.
There's an on-call roster and some after-hours maintenance work, which we ease you into rather than dropping on you in week two.
What you'll need
Attitude and curiosity matter more to us than a perfect CV, so apply even if you don't tick everything.
- Solid networking fundamentals, whether that's Network+, CCNA, MTCNA or just proper hands-on experience
- A good working knowledge of IPv4, VLANs and routing. IPv6 is a bonus
- Some exposure to MikroTik, Juniper, Cisco, Fortinet or similar
- You're comfortable on a Linux CLI
- You can explain a fault clearly to an engineer and also to a customer who doesn't know what a VLAN is
- You dig into problems rather than passing them along
- Full NZ driver's licence and the right to work here
Handy but not essential: point-to-point and PtMP wireless, OSPF, BGP, MPLS/VPLS, a bit of Bash, Python or PowerShell, some understanding of DC power and racking, or any exposure to Microsoft 365, Azure and virtualisation.
Where it goes
Infrastructure Engineer, then Senior Network Engineer, then Network Architect or Infrastructure Lead. That's the path our current seniors took.
We pay for certifications and give you time to study for them, which is easy to write in a job ad and harder to actually do, so ask us about it at the interview and we'll tell you who's studying what right now.
That's the obvious path, but it isn't the only one. Having three companies under one roof means you're not locked into a single track. Plenty of the work is shared across the group already, so you'll get exposure to managed IT and cloud with Cloud Torque and to the large physical infrastructure projects at InfraLink without changing employers. If you find in two years that cloud and security is what you actually enjoy, or that you'd rather be running big cabling and fit-out projects, or that you want to head towards architecture, solutions or project delivery, those roles exist here and we'd rather move you sideways than lose you.
Why work here
You'll be working on carrier grade infrastructure with your name on the change, not shadowing someone who does the interesting parts. Decisions get made in the room, so a good idea on Monday can be in production by Friday. The team is small enough that you'll know everyone and big enough that you're never the only person who understands something.
There's a competitive salary, an on-call allowance, a vehicle for site work, free mobile and free home internet. And it's Hamilton, so you can afford to live near where you work and you're not spending two hours a day on the Southern Motorway.
The details
Based at our Hamilton office, with travel to customer and network sites around the country. Full-time and permanent, including on-call and scheduled after-hours work.
How to apply
Send us your CV and a few lines about something you've built, broken or fixed. Work, home, or a lab in the spare room all count. We'd genuinely rather read about the gear humming away in your garage than another paragraph about being a passionate self-starter.
You'll need the legal right to work in New Zealand.
Other offers great for you!
