INSTALLATION FOREMAN – ELEVATOR & ESCALATOR

Department: New Equipment / Installation Operations
Reports to: Installation Supervisor
Leads: Assigned helpers, and subcontractor installers

JOB PURPOSE

The Installation Foreman is a working foreman who personally installs elevator and escalator equipment while leading the crew at the workface. The role adds skilled installation capacity to major projects and guides other installers through daily work.

Time allocation: Approximately 80% hands-on installation and direct workface leadership and 20% crew supervision, coordination, checks, and reporting across normal assignments. Safety controls, required inspections, and urgent site issues take priority when needed.

The Foreman follows approved drawings, installation procedures, quality standards, and the Project Engineer’s schedule, and escalates technical deviations or constraints outside their authority.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Hands-on installation and workface leadership

  1. Install alongside the crew. Personally perform assigned mechanical installation and, when qualified and authorized, electrical tasks. Work may include rails and brackets; entrances and doors; machines and drives; car frame, platform, counterweight, and car assembly; suspension systems; wiring and components; escalator truss and components where applicable; alignment, adjustment, and correction of defects.
  2. Lead installation as it happens. Set the immediate work sequence, demonstrate methods, assign tasks at the workface, and work alongside installers to meet daily targets. Coach mechanics, technicians, and helpers through critical activities.
  3. Check readiness. Confirm drawings, access, work area, permits, materials, manpower, tools, lifting equipment, and safety controls before starting each activity. Identify and report constraints promptly.
  4. Deliver quality at each stage. Check dimensions, alignment, clearances, fastening, assembly, and workmanship. Correct deficiencies within the crew’s scope and protect installed equipment.
  5. Prepare for the next stage. Complete assigned installation checks and punch-list work for inspection, testing, commissioning, and turnover. Support these activities within the Foreman’s competence and authorization.
  6. Control materials and tools during work. Inspect parts before use, prevent damage and waste, and promptly report missing, incorrect, or defective items.

B. Supervision, coordination, and reporting

  1. Plan and assign daily work. Agree priorities with the Project Engineer, brief the crew, allocate tasks based on skills, and adjust assignments when conditions change.
  2. Provide crew oversight. Monitor attendance, productivity, conduct, and workmanship; identify capability gaps; and recommend coaching, manpower support, or corrective action.
  3. Maintain safety oversight. Lead toolbox talks, verify permits and controls, enforce safe practices, maintain housekeeping, stop unsafe work, and report hazards and incidents. Arrange designated oversight for critical activities when personally performing installation would prevent adequate supervision.
  4. Coordinate site interfaces. Resolve routine access, sequencing, material movement, and trade interfaces with the Project Engineer, general contractor, and other authorized parties. Escalate unresolved issues.
  5. Report progress. Record manpower, completed work, outstanding tasks, delays, shortages, and quality or safety concerns. Maintain required installation and quality checklists and provide concise updates to the Project Engineer/Project manager and Installation supervisor.

DECISION AUTHORITY

The Foreman may assign the crew within the approved plan, sequence daily activities, stop unsafe work, require correction of nonconforming work, and recommend recovery actions. Scope changes, significant technical deviations, commercial commitments, and contractual decisions require approval through the Installation Supervisor.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

  • Hands-on installation contribution: Personally, performs installation work consistent with the approximately 80% workface allocation.
  • Installation output: Crew and personal completed work against realistic daily and weekly targets.
  • Schedule: Achievement of planned installation milestones, accounting for documented site constraints.
  • First-time quality: Correct installation, completed checks, minimal rework, and timely punch-list closure.
  • Safety: Compliance with work controls, effective hazard reporting, and appropriate stop-work decisions.
  • Testing and turnover readiness: Completion and verification of installation prerequisites.
  • Crew leadership and reporting: Effective task allocation and coaching, with timely and accurate progress updates.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Technical or vocational qualification in mechanical, electrical, electromechanical, or a related discipline. Relevant TESDA certification or equivalent is an advantage or Equivalent acquired experience as installer and acquired experience as installation foreman.

Experience: At least 6-10 years of hands-on elevator and/or escalator installation experience across several installation stages. Experience leading a crew as a foreman.

Skills: Able to read approved drawings and procedures, use installation and measuring tools, demonstrate safe methods, coach installers, and report progress and constraints clearly. Specialized electrical and lifting work must remain within the Foreman’s competence and authorization.
