Farebox Installation Technician (Temporary, Overnight)

ESP Enterprises, Inc. is hiring two local technicians for a farebox replacement project on the Spokane Transit Authority bus fleet. This is a temporary, full-time overnight role running from late October through early December.

Project Details

• Location: Spokane Transit Authority Primary Garage, 1230 W. Boone Ave., Spokane, WA 99201
• Duration: October 28 – December 6, 2026
• Schedule:
  • Monday – Friday: 9:00 PM – 4:00 AM
  • Saturdays (as required): 9:00 PM – 4:00 AM
  • Sundays (as required): 9:00 PM – 5:00 AM
• Pay: $25 – $28 per hour, depending on experience
• Completion Bonus: $500 for technicians who stay through the end of the project (December 6, 2026)

Responsibilities

• Base replacement: Remove existing farebox units from bus floor mounts and install new fareboxes with new cable routing.
• Precision assembly: Reinstall complete farebox systems to the specified torque (165 in-lbs / 13.8 ft-lbs).
• Cable routing: Secure cables with proper slack loops to allow full range of movement.
• System testing: Run basic functional tests to verify communications and cashbox door operation.
• Quality control: Make sure every installation meets ESP and LECIP specifications and safety standards.

Required Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience installing low-voltage electronic equipment
• Mechanical aptitude for removing and installing components with hand tools (electric and pneumatic tools are prohibited on certain hardware)
• Cable management skills, including routing, securing, and creating service loops
• Electrical termination skills for 12V and 24V power sources, connectors, and grounding systems
• Ability to work to precise specifications, including torque values and anti-seize application
• Hands-on experience with:
  • Identifying and handling electronic components
  • Electrical connectors and terminations
  • Hand tools and precision instruments
  • Cable routing in confined spaces
  • Vibration damping and strain relief installation

Preferred: Experience in the transit or transportation industry

Physical Requirements

• Able to lift and maneuver farebox units weighing approximately 80 lbs, including lifting them off their bases for modification
• Comfortable working in tight spaces on buses
• Able to stand, bend, and crouch for extended periods
• Fine manual dexterity for detailed connector work
• Good close-up vision for identifying small components

Work Environment

• Overnight shifts in an active transit maintenance facility
• Detailed technical procedures that must be followed exactly
• Team-based work on more complex installations
• Clean work practices around sensitive electronics

Additional Requirements

• Must pass a background check for transit facility access
• Subject to random drug and alcohol testing
• Reliable attendance is essential to meet the project timeline
• Reliable transportation to and from overnight shifts
