Job Description – Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Technician
Job Title: Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Technician
Company: TMG Haartz Solutions
Location: Bostic, NC (On-site)
Business Unit: TMG & Haartz Solutions
Department: Maintenance
Reports To: Plant Equipment & Facilities Manager
Role Summary
TMG Haartz Solutions is building a new manufacturing operation in Bostic, NC, and is seeking a technically strong Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Technician to help establish reliable, safe, and efficient plant operations from the ground up. This is an opportunity to join a growing facility during its early stages and contribute directly to equipment commissioning, process stability, and the development of strong maintenance and controls practices.
The I&C Technician will focus on diagnosing, maintaining, calibrating, and improving industrial instrumentation and control systems that support production equipment and manufacturing processes. The successful candidate will bring hands-on expertise in controls and instrumentation—not solely general electrical or mechanical maintenance—and will work closely with maintenance, engineering, production, and equipment suppliers to resolve complex technical issues, reduce downtime, and support continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
· Troubleshoot, maintain, test, and repair industrial instrumentation, control devices, and automated production systems.
· Calibrate, configure, and verify sensors, transmitters, switches, temperature and pressure instruments, flow/level devices where applicable, and other process-monitoring equipment.
· Diagnose PLC-controlled equipment and industrial control systems; interpret PLC I/O, ladder logic, electrical schematics, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, and control-panel drawings.
· Troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, relays, safety circuits, control panels, and field devices to identify root causes and restore safe operation.
· Trace instrument and control signals, verify input/output points, perform continuity and signal checks, and support loop checks and functional testing.
· Support installation, startup, commissioning, validation, and modification of instrumentation and control systems for new and existing equipment.
· Assist with control-system configuration and troubleshooting; coordinate PLC or HMI program changes with authorized technical resources as required.
· Identify recurring faults and recommend corrective actions, reliability improvements, spare parts, and instrumentation upgrades.
· Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on instrumentation and controls equipment and maintain accurate calibration and service records.
· Use CMMS and computer-based systems to document work orders, troubleshooting results, repairs, calibration activities, and maintenance history.
· Partner with production, engineering, maintenance, and external vendors to resolve technical issues and improve process stability and equipment performance.
· Follow applicable electrical safety, lockout/tagout, machine-safety, environmental, and quality requirements.
· Support production schedules, including occasional off-shift, weekend, or emergency maintenance as needed.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications| Education & Experience
· High school diploma or GED required.
· Associate degree, technical diploma, or equivalent training in Instrumentation & Controls, Electrical/Electronic Technology, Mechatronics, Automation, Industrial Maintenance, or a related field preferred.
· Five or more years of hands-on experience troubleshooting industrial instrumentation, PLCs, and control systems in a manufacturing or industrial environment preferred.
· Demonstrated ability to independently diagnose controls and instrumentation faults and identify root causes.
· Experience supporting equipment startup, commissioning, calibration, or process-control systems strongly preferred.
Technical Skills
· Practical knowledge of industrial instrumentation, sensors, transmitters, switches, signal types, and calibration methods.
· Experience troubleshooting PLC-based control systems; familiarity with PLC I/O, ladder logic, and HMI interfaces.
· Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, loop drawings, instrument datasheets, panel layouts, and technical manuals.
· Working knowledge of VFDs, motors, relays, contactors, control circuits, and industrial electrical safety.
· Ability to use multimeters, process/calibration tools, signal generators or loop calibrators, and other diagnostic equipment appropriate to the systems serviced.
· Experience with 4–20 mA signals and common industrial control communications is preferred.
· Ability to document work clearly using CMMS and computer-based maintenance systems.
Core Competencies
· Advanced troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
· Strong instrumentation and controls technical judgment.
· Safety-focused, methodical approach to diagnostics and repairs.
· Clear communication and accurate technical documentation.
· Ability to work independently and collaborate across maintenance, engineering, and production.
· Adaptability and initiative in a developing manufacturing operation.
· Commitment to quality, reliability, and continuous improvement.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
· Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and reach.
· Ability to work on ladders and at elevated heights.
· Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
· Regular exposure to industrial machinery, moving mechanical parts, electrical systems, noise, heat, humidity, and varying temperatures.
· Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with plant safety requirements.
