What they need

Job Summary
The Interconnection Project Manager leads interconnection efforts for large-load customers, renewable developers, and EV infrastructure projects while playing an active role in growing the firm’s business. This is a seller–doer role within a small, fast-moving consulting environment, combining hands-on project execution with business development, account leadership, and strategic growth initiatives.

In addition to managing the full interconnection lifecycle—from early feasibility and study support through commercial negotiation, engineering coordination, and execution—this role helps shape client relationships, bring in new opportunities, support hiring and team growth, and contribute to the firm’s market presence and partnerships.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys wearing multiple hats, thrives in a startup-style environment, and wants to influence both project outcomes and the direction of the business.

This can be a fully remote or hybrid role (San Diego office, no relocation package).

Duties

Project & Technical Leadership

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, utilities, and project partners throughout the project development and interconnection process.
  • Lead project scoping, including defining technical requirements, financial requirements, timelines, study needs, risks, and deliverables.
  • Coordinate engineering activities to support development of one-lines, technical drawings, equipment specifications, and power flow models, as needed.
  • Track and manage utility studies, interconnection milestones, and commercial agreements.
  • Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, risk registers, and client communications.
  • Support procurement efforts by:

○ Coordinating with engineering, vendors, and procurement partners to define technical requirements

○ Developing RFQs/RFPs

○ Obtaining, tracking, and evaluating long-lead equipment and material quotes

○ Supporting bid clarifications and technical evaluations

○ Assessing lead times, commercial terms, and risk impacts

○ Assisting with vendor selection and purchase order execution in alignment with project schedules and budgets

  • Prepare executive-level summaries and recommendations to support client decision-making.

Client, Account, & Business Development

  • Act as an account lead for select clients, building long-term relationships and identifying follow-on work.
  • Support business development by:

○ Identifying new project opportunities

○ Helping shape proposals and scopes

○ Leveraging industry relationships to bring in new clients and partners

  • Represent the firm in client meetings, industry forums, and partner discussions.
  • Collaborate with leadership on service offerings, market positioning, partnerships, and growth strategies.

Firm & Team Development

  • Contribute to hiring and onboarding of future team members as the firm grows.
  • Help establish internal processes, templates, tools, and best practices for project delivery and client management.
  • Provide input on marketing efforts, thought leadership, and external communications.
  • Support continuous improvement across project delivery, client experience, and internal operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline; experience in substation and/or transmission projects required.
  • 5–10+ years of experience in power, utility, or infrastructure project delivery (utility, EPC, developer, or consulting preferred).
  • Strong familiarity with interconnection processes (ERCOT, CAISO, SPP, MISO, WECC, PJM, SERC, and/or utility-specific processes).
  • Working knowledge of substation design, transmission line design, and utility engineering standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage clients, projects, and multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong communication, organization, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Comfort operating in a lean, entrepreneurial environment with evolving responsibilities.
  • PMP or equivalent project management experience a plus.
