Intermediate Accountant

I’m working with a growing Auckland CBD accounting practice that is looking for an Intermediate Accountant to join their team. This is a great opportunity for someone with at least two years of New Zealand public practice experience who is ready to take more ownership of their work, build stronger client relationships and continue developing technically.

You’ll be working across a varied portfolio of clients, with a strong focus on compliance, including financial statements, tax returns and GST. There’s also plenty of opportunity to get involved in client advisory, systems and process improvement, so this is a role where you won’t simply be sitting behind a screen processing returns.

What you'll be doing

• Preparing financial statements and New Zealand income tax returns for individuals, companies and small businesses.
• Managing a portfolio of clients and taking ownership of assignments from start to finish.
• Preparing GST returns and completing supporting reconciliations.
• Working with residential property and rental accounts.
• Communicating directly with clients, understanding their needs and providing practical accounting support.
• Answering day-to-day accounting and tax queries and escalating more complex matters when required.
• Liaising with Inland Revenue on routine client matters.
• Supporting clients with cloud accounting systems, particularly Xero.
• Maintaining accurate workpapers and ensuring all compliance work is completed to a high standard.
• Contributing ideas around systems, processes and ways to improve the client experience.
• Working closely with senior accountants and directors while continuing to build your technical capability.

What we're looking for

• At least 2 years' experience in a New Zealand-based public practice accounting firm.
• Strong knowledge of New Zealand accounting and tax compliance.
• Experience preparing financial statements, tax returns and GST returns.
• Excellent attention to detail and a genuine pride in producing quality work.
• Strong communication skills and the confidence to deal directly with clients.
• Good organisation and time management skills, with the ability to manage deadlines across a portfolio.
• A proactive attitude -someone who will ask questions, take ownership and look for ways to improve things rather than simply ticking boxes.
• Confidence using Xero and other cloud-based accounting technology.
• CA/CPA studies, or a relevant accounting qualification, would be advantageous.
