Vietnamese Interpreter – Independent Contractor

SpanicUS is seeking a professional Vietnamese interpreter to provide language support for appointments in medical, legal, community, and business settings. Interpreters may receive assignments in person, by phone, or through video remote interpreting, depending on client needs. This role is ideal for bilingual professionals who are reliable, punctual, culturally aware, and able to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in sensitive situations.

Responsibilities include accurately interpreting between English and Vietnamese, following interpreter ethics and role boundaries, arriving on time for assignments, and communicating clearly with the SpanicUS team regarding availability and scheduling.

Duties

• Interpret accurately and efficiently between Vietnamese and English in medical, legal, and/or community settings, depending on the assignment.
• Provide consecutive and simultaneous interpreting as appropriate to the setting, ensuring clear and complete communication between all parties.
• Provide medical interpreting during consultations, procedures, patient intake, and other healthcare interactions, when assigned to medical interpreting services.
• Provide legal interpreting during legal proceedings, interviews, meetings, and other interactions involving legal professionals and clients, when assigned to legal interpreting services.
• Provide interpreting services in community settings, including social services, educational institutions, government agencies, and other public-service environments, when applicable.
• Accurately convey the meaning, tone, and intent of the speaker without adding, omitting, summarizing, or altering information.
• Use appropriate terminology and maintain consistency when interpreting specialized medical, legal, and community-related information.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to applicable privacy, professional, and ethical standards when handling sensitive information.
• Facilitate effective communication while maintaining impartiality and professional boundaries at all times.

Experience

• Strong command of both Vietnamese and English
• Proven experience providing professional interpretation in medical, legal, and/or community settings. Experience in one specialized setting may qualify; experience in multiple settings is preferred but not required.
• Medical interpreting experience, when applicable, including familiarity with medical terminology and healthcare environments.
• Legal interpreting experience, when applicable, including familiarity with legal terminology and legal proceedings.
• Knowledge of general community interpreting practices and terminology, when applicable.
• Ability to accurately convey complex and sensitive information while preserving the speaker's meaning, tone, and intent.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
• Understanding of confidentiality, impartiality, accuracy, completeness, and professional boundaries in interpreting.
• Demonstrated ability to remain professional, discreet, and composed in sensitive or high-stakes situations.
• Cultural competency and formal interpreter training or certification are highly desirable.

Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
