IoT Consultant

Purpose of the role

Builds and deploys the edge layer that securely and reliably moves plant data from PLC, DCS, SCADA and historian systems into the cloud platform. You own the standard, mandatory ingestion path built on AWS IoT Greengrass and SiteWise, packaged as reusable blueprints that can be rolled out plant after plant.

Key responsibilities:

1. Develop ingestion services using AWS IoT SiteWise, IoT Greengrass and AWS IoT Core, including device registry, policies and message routing.
2. Deliver OT/IT integration and data ingestion for plants, bridging controller, SCADA and historian systems to the cloud securely.
3. Produce deployable edge and local application blueprints that can be rolled out to new plants and lines.

Edge ingestion services

1. Develop edge ingestion services using AWS IoT Greengrass and AWS IoT SiteWise (must have), including components, stream management and local processing.
2. Implement the standardized edge-to-cloud data pipeline (the mandatory ingestion path) with consistent naming, timestamps, units and quality codes.
3. Integrate with PLC/DCS and SCADA systems via OPC-UA, MQTT or historian interfaces; configure device connectivity and telemetry collection.

Resilience and performance

1. Ensure resilient, low-latency transfer from OT to cloud: local buffering, store-and-forward, back-fill after outages, retry policies and time synchronisation.
2. Size and test throughput and latency per site; monitor ingestion health, data gaps and device status.

Containerized plant deployments

1. Build containerized applications for on-premise plant deployment; manage images, configuration and secrets for constrained or restricted environments.
2. Package reusable edge deployment blueprints and templates so a new plant or line is deployed through automation with no manual steps.
3. Implement secure provisioning and updates: certificate-based device identity, fleet provisioning, over-the-air updates and rollback.

Plant integration and operations

1. Work within plant network zones (Purdue model, DMZ, outbound-only connectivity) with OT, IT and security teams; follow plant change and safety procedures.
2. Lead commissioning and site acceptance testing; create runbooks and train plant support teams.
3. Map plant tags to canonical assets with the Semantic Architecture team, using the approved signal-mapping process.

Required qualifications and experience

Must have

1. Hands-on experience with AWS IoT Greengrass and AWS IoT SiteWise (must have).
2. Experience building containerised applications with Docker for on-premise or edge deployment.
3. Practical knowledge of industrial protocols and interfaces: OPC-UA, MQTT and historian connectors.
4. Programming experience in Python or Node.js for edge components and integration.
5. Experience designing buffering, retry and offline-tolerant data pipelines.
6. Hands-on experience with AWS IoT Core alongside Greengrass and SiteWise.
7. Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Instrumentation, Computer Science or equivalent experience.

Good to have

1. Experience in plant environments: PLC, DCS, SCADA and historian systems (for example Siemens, Rockwell, Honeywell, Yokogawa, ABB, Emerson, OSIsoft PI).
2. Sparkplug B, Modbus, EtherNet/IP; lightweight Kubernetes (k3s) at the edge.
3. IEC 62443 and Purdue-model network design; secure remote access to plants.
4. Terraform or similar IaC for fleet provisioning and edge deployment.

Preferred certifications

1. AWS Certified IoT or Solutions Architect – Associate (preferred).
2. ISA/IEC 62443 Cybersecurity Fundamentals or GICSP (nice to have).
3. Vendor certifications for PLC/SCADA/historian platforms (nice to have).
