What they need
Engineering People Manager – Site Reliability Engineering (SRE)
Job Summary
We are looking for an Engineering People Manager (EPM) to lead a pod of 8–12 Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) across the full employment lifecycle—from onboarding and capability development to performance, career progression, wellbeing, and shift management.
This role is particularly focused on developing a predominantly junior SRE population, with approximately 60–70% of the team at junior level. The successful candidate will play a key role in coaching and developing engineers into experienced, senior-level professionals while maintaining strong operational and people-management standards.
The environment operates 24x7, and the EPM will rotate shift bands with the other Engineering People Manager, including the night shift. Regular exposure to the different working bands is an essential part of the role to effectively understand and support the team.
Key Responsibilities1. People Management & Workplace Behavior – 35%
- Manage a team of 8–12 SREs throughout the employee lifecycle.
- Conduct regular weekly 1:1s with all direct reports and maintain consistent coaching and feedback cadence.
- Lead performance management, goal setting, development planning, and performance review cycles.
- Address attendance, collaboration, communication, handover discipline, and workplace behavior issues proactively.
- Monitor employee wellbeing, fatigue, and shift-health indicators and take appropriate action before they impact retention or operational performance.
- Handle difficult conversations regarding performance or behavior professionally and directly.
- Foster an environment of accountability, psychological safety, continuous learning, and professional growth.
- Capability Development & Training – 25%
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date Capability Ledger records for each direct report.
- Assess individual skills and development gaps against required service-line capabilities.
- Create and manage individual training and development plans aligned with the engineering capability roadmap.
- Coordinate training schedules and ensure training is incorporated into the shift rota rather than treated as additional or ad-hoc time.
- Coach junior and mid-level engineers toward increased technical ownership and senior-level capability.
- Track progress and provide regular feedback on capability development.
- Resourcing & Shift Management – 25%
- Manage and execute team rotas within a 24x7 operational environment.
- Approve leave requests, arrange relief coverage, and manage overtime requirements.
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels and operational coverage across all shift bands.
- Maintain regular 1:1s and people-management activities regardless of an employee's shift rotation.
- Rotate across shift bands, including night shifts, alongside the other Engineering People Manager.
- Own onboarding for new hires and Academy graduates, including environment setup, tooling, processes, operational expectations, and the transition to shift-based work.
- Ensure new joiners are properly integrated into the team and operational model.
- Talent Management & Career Progression – 15%
- Conduct interviews and participate in hiring decisions for the SRE group.
- Identify high-potential engineers and future successors within the pod.
- Assign and support Academy mentors for junior and graduate engineers.
- Build structured development and promotion cases based on demonstrated capability and performance.
- Partner with Service Reliability Leads and Tech Leads to ensure technical and operational input is incorporated into promotion and progression decisions.
- Support internal mobility and career development opportunities within the engineering organization.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), DevOps, or a closely related engineering discipline.
- 2+ years of experience as a People Manager, Engineering Manager, Team Lead, or equivalent leadership role.
- Strong technical foundation and current working knowledge of:
- Linux
- Kubernetes
- At least one public cloud platform (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
- Observability and monitoring platforms
- Incident management and response processes
- Demonstrated experience coaching and developing engineers, with evidence of team members progressing in capability or seniority under your leadership.
- Willingness and availability to rotate across shift bands, including night shifts, in a 24x7 operational environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to address performance and behavioral concerns directly and constructively.
- Strong organizational and workforce-management skills, particularly in shift-based or operational environments.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications
- Formal training or certification in coaching, leadership, or emotional intelligence (EQ).
- Experience onboarding and developing fresh graduates or early-career engineers.
- Familiarity with competency frameworks, capability matrices, skills assessments, or structured career frameworks.
- Previous experience as a Duty Manager, Shift Lead, Incident Manager, or similar role within a 24x7 operations environment.
- Experience managing distributed or geographically dispersed engineering teams.
- Experience working closely with technical leads and service reliability/operations leadership.
