Senior Java Software Engineer – People Systems Platform

We are seeking a Senior Java Software Engineer to design and build highly scalable, distributed backend systems that power our enterprise People Technology platform. This role focuses on developing complex, high-performance applications supporting millions of employee transactions across Recruiting, Core HR, Compensation, Payroll, Benefits, Talent Management, and Workforce platforms.

You'll work on large-scale distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and cloud-native microservices while partnering with Product, HR Technology, and Architecture teams to deliver mission-critical enterprise software.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop highly scalable, fault-tolerant Java applications supporting enterprise People Systems and Human Capital Management platforms.
• Architect and build distributed microservices capable of processing high volumes of employee, recruiting, payroll, compensation, and workforce management transactions.
• Develop complex backend services, REST APIs, and event-driven applications using Java, Spring Boot, and modern distributed system design principles.
• Design resilient, high-availability systems emphasizing scalability, performance, observability, and reliability.
• Build reusable platform services supporting Recruiting, Applicant Tracking, Core HR, Employee Lifecycle Management, Compensation Management, Benefits Administration, Payroll, Talent Management, Performance Management, Learning Management, and Workforce Planning.
• Design and implement integrations with enterprise platforms including Workday, Oracle HCM, SAP SuccessFactors, ADP, UKG, Ceridian Dayforce, Greenhouse, Lever, and other HR technologies.
• Optimize application performance through efficient algorithms, caching strategies, asynchronous processing, concurrency, and distributed messaging.
• Collaborate with architects and engineering teams to define system architecture, service boundaries, API contracts, and data models.
• Lead technical design discussions, conduct code reviews, mentor engineers, and drive engineering best practices.
• Build secure, cloud-native applications utilizing CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, infrastructure as code, and continuous delivery.
• Troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, and continuously improve platform stability and operational excellence.

Required Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional Java software engineering experience.
• Expert-level experience with Java, Spring Boot, Spring Framework, REST APIs, and distributed microservices.
• Strong experience designing and building large-scale, highly available distributed systems.
• Deep understanding of object-oriented design, multithreading, concurrency, asynchronous processing, and JVM performance tuning.
• Experience designing scalable APIs and event-driven architectures using Kafka, RabbitMQ, JMS, or similar messaging technologies.
• Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
• Strong SQL skills and experience with relational and NoSQL databases.
• Experience working within enterprise HR, People Systems, Human Capital Management (HCM), Recruiting, Payroll, Compensation, Benefits, or Workforce Management domains.
• Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, scalability, resiliency, and security best practices.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building platforms that support high transaction volumes and mission-critical enterprise workloads.
• Familiarity with HR technologies including Workday, Oracle HCM, SAP SuccessFactors, Greenhouse, Lever, ADP, UKG, or Ceridian Dayforce.
• Experience with domain-driven design (DDD), event sourcing, CQRS, or distributed systems architecture.
