What they need
We are replenishing team Aorangi. Aorangi is a deeply loved 16 years old who lives with his parents, attends his local school and is supported to engage his passions, interests and successfully navigate his daily routines. He has a wonderful team of current supporters who we are looking to strengthen by bringing new team members on board.
This role is not about supervising or keeping someone occupied, it is about building a genuine relationship with Aorangi, discovering what engages his passions, encouraging his interests, helping him develop life skills and creating opportunities for him to make choices, try new things and become more independent.
Some of the ways you’ll assist Aorangi are:
- Help him get ready for the day, prepare meals or organise what he needs.
- Cook, shop and work on everyday life skills together.
- Go swimming, walking, to the park, play games or explore the community.
- Work on creative projects using video, photography, technology, gaming, music or art.
- Encourage communication, learning and social confidence through everyday activities.
- Support friendships and opportunities to connect with other young people.
- Help him plan activities, make decisions and increasingly take the lead.
- Support him to manage anxiety, tiredness or overwhelm in a calm and respectful way.
- Bring your own interests, skills and ideas to the relationship.
- Most importantly, you'll be doing things with Aorangi, not simply doing things for him.
Hours & remuneration
We have a range of shifts available in the roster. We'll provide the options and details to those that express their interest (see below for details on how to do this). You'll also have the opportunity of being employed as either a contractor or employee.
About you
As we continue to build team Aorangi, we are looking for people who are warm, creative, reliable and genuinely people focused.
You don't necessarily need a specific qualification. We're more interested in who you are, how you relate to people and what you can bring to the role, but equally you might have experience in disability support, youth work, education, health, sport, recreation, coaching, creative or digital work — or you may simply have the right personality and life experience.
You'll ideally be:
- Warm, patient, empathetic and respectful.
- Reliable and someone who follows through.
- Creative, curious and able to think on your feet.
- A good communicator and problem-solver.
- Encouraging without creating dependence.
- Calm when things become challenging.
- Comfortable with neurodiversity, anxiety and emotional regulation challenges.
- Confident enough to use initiative, while always respecting Aorangi's choices.
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
- Open to learning, feedback and doing things differently when needed.
Experience with autism, ADHD, seizures, Positive Behaviour Support or neurodiversity are an advantage, but attitude and fit are extremely important.
